Hi,

Sorry if this is a noob question, I couldn't find an answer anywhere.

What I'm wondering is, the downward part of the mast halyard, does it run inside where the shroud connects to the tang (thus running along the mast) or outside of the shroud (looks a bit weird)?

Thanks!

I am assuming we're talking about the main halyard on a Hobie 16 . . .

When raising the sail, the halyard needs to be outside / forward of the shroud / tang. Until you get experience with raising the sail, it's easiest to have a helper pull on the halyard from the front of the boat while you feed the sail into the track.

Once the sail is raised and the halyard hooked on the latch, then tuck it behind the shroud / tang before cleating it off to help keep it out of the way of the jib battens.

Thanks for that!

Another question, how does one hook the halyard in that latch? My halyard is just a rope. I have seen where people talk about there being a ball or something on the halyard but I don't have that.

If you've got an all-metal mast, the halyard should be half wire / half rope.

If you have a Comptip mast, the halyard is almost all line with about 18" of wire at the end that attaches to the mainsail's head.

On both types of halyards, there is a metal bead pressed on the wire that engages the latch when the sail is fully raised. It's important to do this since the cleats on the mast are not meant to carry the load of the sail, only to stow the halyard away when it's been latched.

Wow, I had no idea. I bought this boat second hand from someone and had never sailed before. The original owner had it rigged with plain line (no wire or ball). Thanks for the information.
