Nothing against the Hobie tramps (I have a set) but I'm wondering if there are any aftermarket options that might feature more of an open weave or netting. I said a good deal in heavy winds and don't like the wind getting under my tramps and lifting the boat on the windward side. I did search the archives for Island accessories but only found one source and they don't have anything ready made for the Islands.

Search on this forum for haka. They seem to be the best alternitive to tramps in wind or waves.

Thanks. I'm familiar with those but am holding out for a mesh tramp.

Chrisj got some aftermarket half tramps on ebay and he reported on them here

Doesn't look like they are available now though.
Some more info on other tramp alternatives here

I was a big fan of the genuine tramps and still use them but now it's always in conjunction with the haka. The haka are the most significant mod I've made on the Islands!

I've had a pair of tramps, which came with the used 2011 boat I bought. I don't like the principle of a full tramp under strong wind conditions and sold them immediately. Of course, you don't have to deploy a tramp, but that would be inconvenient if you are on a camping trip and using the tramps for hauling equipment.

I just completed the construction of a pair of 3-board hakas. They are modeled after Jim Quinlan's (aka CaptnChaos) hakas described under the "The HAKA Bench Seat" thread--http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=37645&start=570 Scroll down to see my description of Jim's hakas.

Hakas provide most of the benefits of tramps w/o the danger of causing a capsize. Half tramps would be similiar to hakas & lighter, but without the lateral stability and strength of hakas.

Again, thanks, but I'm going for mesh type trampolines, if they're available.

I stopped using my aftermarket tramps as soon as I built a haka/quarterdeck. The only advantage I can see with tramps is they're better for carrying children.

These use the fine vinyl mesh material:

79527001 TRAMP SET AI - BLACK
79527011 TRAMP SET AI - GRAY
88527001 TRAMP SET TI - BLACK
88527011 TRAMP SET TI - GRAY

We also have a fabric mesh material we use on bigger catamarans. It is very labor intensive to build, but worth a look. The mesh has holes of approx 1/2" x 3/4" diamond pattern. I'll ask our engineers about it if there is real interest. Less UV stable... more expensive.

Matt,

I already have a set of the Hobie tramps. Extremely well made but I want something in a more open mesh that doesn't catch as much wind.

I'd certainly be interested but do understand that unless the demand warrants it that it probably won't happen. I do appreciate your inquiring, of course.

Tom,

How bout using a pickup truck tailgate replacement?
The heavy mesh or strap weave might be long enough to spread across AMA's????

Hmm?????

Thanks. That's a little larger mesh than what I'm considering. They can be made, of course, I was just checking first to see if there were already any out there.

Sunrise tramps in Florida does lots of big boats like the Farrier tris, and has quite a few mesh alternatives. Give them a call. You might have to use google to find the #... try http://www.multihullnets.com/
