Bubbleboy, thanks for all the pics. If been wanting to put a 898 on my Adventure Island but have been uncertain if it was possible. I think I can do it now. I'll post some pics when i finish.

On the AI, what about using one of the RAM mounts that clamps around the outrigger bar at the front of the yak?? I guess the mount you choose really depends on where you want the sounder head to be when you're in the "drivers seat" ...

something akin to this from over at yakass.net (http://yakass.net/articles/equipment/69 ... he-monster)

not sure if this will work, as I don't have access to an AI to see...

an option I like for routing the cable is this one:

however it only works this way if you have a removable handle and a sounder with a small connector...

alternately:

A cable cover from your local chandlery (these are $4 at my local store)

which will allow up to a 32mm hole underneath... drill one at each end of the yak, and it looks nice and neat...

then use a RAM mount in the side pocket, with a Humminbird platform on the top :)

to end up looking like this:

Given an AI at full speed bounces around a lot, so the bigger ball will give better strength... I'd also strengthen the back of the mounting with some cutting board...

I looked at the larger ball mount and found it a little excessive. For me, it wasn't the RAM mount moving, it was the mounting plates on the PA. That's why I built a metal brace to stop some of the wiggle. Time on the water proved this worked fine.

Unrealshots, that was you that was going to mount it on a Revo. I thought it was someone else. Send me some pics when you get it finished.
If I mounted mine on the Aka crossbar on my AI I dont think I could reach it comfortably even with the 5" clamp bar on it. But then I'm almost 52 and not getting any younger.
I'm thinking about mounting my 898 half way between the rudder "up" cleat and the crossbar so I can swing it up close when I'm operating it or swing it forward to get it out of the way when pedaling or fishing.
I think it would be great if we could get a longer clamp bar for the 1.5" ball so if would swing farther forward and back. I checked on Rams site but didn't see one, maybe I missed it.
I wouldn't mind using the 2.25" ball but the base plate is about 3.5" dia. too big to mount on the side of the AI. I can get a 2.25" ball with a smalller base but I guess I would have to buy it seperate.
Let me know what you guys think. I'll take all the help I can get. Thx :D

Very impressive workmanship. I have a 998c which uses the same transducer and GPS puck and my side-scan works great on both sites of my 2012 PA12.

What I don't have is the nice transducer mount as shown in this thread. I'm using a bastardized Liberator swing-arm mount. It works, but the plastic it's made out of is too flimsy for the heavy transducer. If you (OP) would be willing to craft one of these aluminum ones for me, I'm willing to pay you for it. Just send me a PM here.

Thanks Andrew, payment sent via PayPal. I was wondering what I was going to do about that big-heavy transducer. The plastic shaft that comes with the Liberator is just too lightweight.

On my 2012 PA, there's a round depression up on the bow with a Hobie decal in it. I removed the decal, drilled a hole in the center, and the Humminbird GPS puck fit perfectly in that spot. When I lay the H-bar down, the padded rest sits just aft of the GPS puck and doesn't interfere with it.

Now to do the seat riser mod. Trying to get to the tie-downs for the tackle hatch while in the seat is really frustrating... ;)

Bubbleboy, how is the side imaging ducer install holding up. Now that you more time to reflect, would you change anything? Are you satisfied with the SI images / tech? Any chance you have any pics/screenshots of it in action.
Thanks for your time and sharing.

Does anyone from Hobie know if you can use a Humminbird 798 in the PA 12? What about their 800 series and up?

Thanks for you help. :)

I have a HB 798 on my PA12. I do have the transducer mounted in the cavity just as designed. The SI is limited to 80ft on each side which is plenty for the type of fishing I primarily do.

It worked out very well for the 2012 season. I've since sold the 898 and the PA separately, but the future owner of the PA wanted the arm. It's going to a good home.

Would I do it again...hmmm. The 898 was very cool, but big. I found I didn't use the side imaging as much as I thought. If I was to do that size again, I'd move up to the 9 series to get the extra screen size.

If I was going with another PA, I'd do a Humminbird 597ci HD DI Combo or 788ci HD DI Combo and still mount the transducer externally. Probably the 597ci is what I'll buy for the 2013 season paired up with an Outback with the ducer attached to the rudder.

Cheers,
Adam

Appreciate the reply. I am a bass fisherman for the most part and I am considering a SI FF for the future. But like everything else I wonder if these fishing accessories / tools catch more fisherman than they help catch fish. I have a simple sonar FF now and it seems to have a limited cone area. But I have to admit I am parallel to shoreline the majority of time and the thought of seeing side views seems like it would be very beneficial. But that could just be me justifying the sound of monies leaving my wallet

I have the same setup and the side imaging was very noisy and pretty much worthless. Will you share some pics?

Be glad to, Just need to find some extra time right now. (Two jobs) The imaging (Down and side) on my unit have been great. I'll make sure to save some from the next time out.

MM - I have a PA14. I'm in Chandler. Give me a shout if going out. Like to check out that HB install and how it functions. I am on the fence about adding SI to the new yak.
