I recently acquired a used Hobie kayak w/ the peddle drive system. The boat seems to imediately upon launch get about 2" of water in the drive well ....is this normal or do I have a problem. The water does not get inside the hull itself and drain out when the boat comes out of the water. The boat is a 13', single seat, and is about 7-8 years old, though I have not yet figured out the model. There does not appear to be much water inside the hull when I empty the boat....maybe a cup full.

Thank you,
Don

The drive well is a open well and is not intended to block water from entering the cockpit, so having water in it is normal. All sit on top kayaks that use cockpit drain scuppers will get water up through the scuppers depending on the weight of the user and water conditions. The design of the seat area and level of the floor will also contribute to how much water may be in the cockpit. Many models will see one or more inches in the floor area when in use. That is a matter of the design related to capacity, height of the seat (stability) and level of the feet compared to the seat (comfort). The lower seat is more stable and feet lower than the seat is more comfortable.
