I've been using a 10' 6" Shimano technium heavy weight. If I were to buy another one, I would get medium heavy action. I troll from a downrigger on my AI for salmon. The jury is still out for me on the length tho, I might go for a shorter rod although I really like the technium's performance.

The one with the best leash.

Other than that, I find a medium weight 9' rod and spinning reel work best. Like an uglystick. Maximum trolling spread, easy to clear the Amas when maneuvering fish, and still sensitive enough to see your lures swimming action or for probing the bottom.

One rod a little heavier that the other is a good idea, both with spare loaded spools.

As cheap as possible. They're gonna get plenty wet.

Depends on what you are trolling for!

Around here, when I troll for striped bass I use a fast action 10 -17# 7.5 foot spinning rod. For salmon and halibut its a 7 foot shimano trevala mh
When we go down to Baja its a 7 foot 30 -80 # seeker Hercules

7 feet seems the ideal length for me I can reach outboard of the am as, and around the bow, but there isn't too much leverage to make fighting a big fish a bi$%&

Thanks for the tips.
I was also going to try trolling with a paravane. A bit like a dipsy diver.

I presume that I will need a stiffer rod to deal with the drag of the paravane.

Anyone recommend this method?

Yes, a shorter stiffer rod, prerigged just for that. What you'll need is a really good rod holder. And a really good drag.

I tend to high speed troll with bigger lures and deep divers. Most lures want to be run under 6 knots.

It's hard for me to slow down that much. 8)

One of these mother's day trips to waikaloa I am gonna have to get up enough pepper to ask you to take me fishing over there...
Baja nearly drove me crazy to not have to wear a dry suit all the time.
