Ok, so my TI is in winter storage about 500 miles from my home. I've been inspired by this thread to take a crack at a haka design, but I'm super concerned about doing it without measurements.

Are there dwaings of dimensions available from Hobie?
If not what are the dimensions that everybody has been using, have we developed a kind of standard dimension?

Also what is the diameter of the Aka bars?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have an idea for my CNC machine and would love to get cracking.

leelanauX,

I've not come across any such diagram with various dimensions, but there could be one out there. I believe the only detailed diagram from hobie is the parts list.

I suggest reading this thread in its entirety once, maybe twice, then going back and looking at the various designs. You will find there is no standard design, which makes the thread that much more valuable. Everyone has their own ideas and we are lucky many before us have shared those ideas. Pick a design that suits your need (fishing, racing, expedition, supermodel display, etc.) and make it your own by incorporating your own ideas.

The aka bars are (these are my measurements) 1-11/16" in diameter. 2" pvc lined with some non-slip rubber padding such as fatigue mat material fits around them nicely, but again there are many ways to achieve this.

the distance from the front and rear aka (again my measurements) is 56-15/16". I have read that this distance varies (wider out toward the amas and narrower the closer you get to the hull). I was able to notice a minute difference, perhaps a 1/16" of an inch, but straight enough for the tolerances I am working with to make it square. I have a 2012 model.

I hope this helps you as this thread has certainly helped me.

yaknrugger, have you modified your sail to allow for that very high position of the sheet? I suspect that if you haven't, the foot of the sail will be tight compared to the leech, and you will lose a lot of sail power.

Thanks Tony. I have not modified the sail. It is still in trials right now, but I will say that when the sail is fully out, there is not much of a difference in the angle from the clew to the rear sheet blocks when the boat is configured normal. Perhaps only a couple of inches.

When seated, I have about 8-10 inches clearance from the sheet. The main reason as expected is clearance of the sheet when furled. When fishing, I immediately furl and the sheet essentially clotheslining me (pun intended) every time was getting annoying.

I do wonder about performance. I was in 10mph wind and 2-3 ft seas (gulf of mexico) last Saturday and was able to achieve 8mph (gps reading) at best, with 2 sailors and full fishing gear. What kind of performance should I be getting?

I couldn't really tell a difference in performance with or without the mod, but then again I don't have a lot of sailing experience.

We cant WAIT to see what the giant PVC pipe is for!

Haha i finally got my moneys worth outta my holesaw kit....i tryed to design the cheapest thing possible....thats about 10$ worth of wood an its unbelievably strong i sat on one of the 2x4s with the holes im 210 an there was no noticable flex

Pvc drain pipe  9$ 10ft legnths of 4inch....alot lighter than normal pvc and will make a killer 25$ mast hard case just cut it to mast legnth add a coupling endcaps and some end padding of some sort and ur sail an mast are much safer

Works AI or TI same material cost

Stringy -Thanks Brah. That felt good!

I liked that the tune was a loose rip off of the "Hawaii 5-0" theme. ;-)

Let's not forget the mother of all Haka ships = the "TI3" with 4 mighty Hakas on board, allowing for 2x the fun.

Cheers!

Just wanted to provide a progress report. Here are the hakas after staining, after 1st coat, and after 2nd coat of varnish. I see what you mean about the absence of subtlety CC.

Thanks for the comments Nohuhu and Puget.
You could hear the Hawai 5- O inspiration coming through in the theme.
After putting this together and grabbing all those stills I've got a severe case of wooden envy.
Those wooden haka really do look good! 8)

Great Video ! I'm just surprised that Hobie hasn't engineered a set of hakas for the masses. They are my favorite addon. NOHUHU and Batman have made their mark in Hobie History.
