Hi All,

I'm selling my Hobie Mirage Oasis tandem kayak, and I have a couple of interested parties who are too far away to come and pick it up. Does anyone know the least expensive way to ship a kayak domestically? Is there any particular carrier who specializes in this type of shipping at a reasonable cost?

Thanks

I tried that, but the carrier they use wants over $700 to ship the kayak. Obviously they have a serious volume discount. The cheapest rate I've found is about $340 (Louisiana to Florida). Anyone know of anything cheaper?

I've heard of someone shipping a kayak on a passenger rail line, but I just checked the Via Rail website in Canada and it seems to have length restrictions which wouldn't allow the Oasis to fit.

So maybe you could try asking a passenger rail line company, but I now have my doubts.

Start talking to all your friends and associates to see who is going on vacation in that general direction - then arrange for them to meet the buyer if they are willing. Making it worth their time by helping out with gas or hotel costs should help grease the skids (pass that cost on to the buyer as shipping)...

I searched the yellow pages and called a few local Freight companies 1.5 yrs ago and finally found one that delivers/picks up on the route that I needed. They picked up and shipped my Outback for me from NJ to VA for a flat $150.

I'd recommed calling a few locals.

You may want to poke around Ebay and see the California Kayak sellers. They ship nationally for $149 to a freight forwarders terminal at the airport.

I've used an outfit called uship.com to request bids for shipments. Works out well, if you stay with shippers with lots of good feedback, just like e-bay.
Shipped motorcycles, and daughter's move four states away, not even a hiccup. All very good experiences.

Also shipped by 17ft Pygmy Coho wooden yak to Jamaica of all places! Buyer paid confirmed funds, as much as boat! Built crate, and off she went via Yellow Freight and mothership! :D

So you can ship a kayak but not kayak a ship? Sorry, had a moment.

I shipped my Hobie Oasis Tandem from the USVI via container ship to Miami for under $300. I wrapped it in a blue tarp and taped the crap out of it. Arrived fine.
