I do not think that Jim (Penguinman) brings a boat from California. In 2011 he used Palican's TI and only brought the new rudders and his jib. I suspect that he will be using Pelican's AI that Pelican used in his 2012 UF attempt. Pelican is registered in the TI. I am sure Mat can get the inside scoop...

One Week to the start of the Watertribe 2013 EC

I'll be following the progress of all the "Island" entrants with great interest. I'm looking forward to reading and watching your exploits. I hope that GoPro works well on top of your mast Paul! 8)

BTW- Has anyone thought about putting a TI mast/sail on an AI for this event? I've been experimenting with this and it does give a performance increase in lighter winds without adding all the complications of a jib. When the wind gets up you just furl it.

Stingy,

the weather predictions for next week look like the EC will be a sleigh ride, down wind all the way. No need for a TI sail.

Interesting boat based on the TI in the race this year.

His brother who is doing the race with him is short. He will find out why they call it a BOOM...

That TI copy does look interesting, though hiking out and tacking would be a real co-ordination challenge for sure! :o
Shame it's missing Hobies X factor (MD).
Looking forward to the progress reports.

Teak who built this boat, when he registered for the EC on the Roster list said: "working hard to complete by race, my goal last race was to beat dogslife, I am trying again with a new boat."

It really sucks to have a target on your back, but I wish him luck...

All packed up and ready to go:

During the EC I will try to post to my BLOGGER page http://dogslifeadventures.blogspot.com/ using my I-phone APP. Just tried it and seems to work well. The picture size is on the smaller size. Do not expect a lot of writing.

Having some breakfast and then I will head down to the beach to check in. There are a lot of interesting boats this year. Will post pictures on my Blog through the day.

Paul/ Jim:
It looks like it's going to be a wild ride tomorrow, according to Sarasota weather forcast they are predicting small craft advisory, winds from the NW over 25 mph and head high waves in the afternoon (hopefully head high means the forcaster is very short). This is my area, this is where we sail most of the time (local knowledge), If I were entering this year I think I would think about going down the intercoastal through Sarasota bay, and hang closer to the right (eastern) shore, the waves will be much lower there with the wind from the NW. Long boat key is very narrow with not many tall buildings, so you will still have pretty good wind. Sarasota bay is very long and generates big waves in the middle and closer to the eastern shore on the left when the wind is from the NW. If you do go the seaward route, Lido, and Siesta Key beaches are very shallow for quite a ways out so your going to see huge breakers rolling in, especially near their northern ends where it is shallower. Low tide is around 9:00 am. It's pretty shallow on the east side of Jew and sister keys, so it might be better to stay in the channel on the west side of those keys (will be less waves also), and make sure to steer east of the very shallow sand bar just north of new pass (near Sarasota Sailing squadron, where I usually launch), you will get fouled up in the grass there. There is a big channel marker there, stay east of that and you will be fine. In past years most people went out big pass in Sarasota bay, if you do go that route go straight out for a ways to avoid the breakers in the shallow area on the peninsula (south of the inlet, trust me you will see the waves), I have drug bottom around there at low tide, sand builds up there from time to time so it's unpredictable.
I suppose you could get all the way to Boca Grand/Sanibel on the intercoastal (though I have never tried myself, and don't know much about the bridges that far south). If you do come out the Venice Jetty, there is sometimes quite a current there. South of there is getting out of my regular turf.
Hope this helps
Good luck
Bob
