On the rear side wall of my i14t there is a 1" diameter patch that has a slow leak. The repair manual says small leaks can be repaired by letting a drop of glue harden over the hole.

Whilst this is an option, I'd prefer to remove the patch and re-glue a larger and neater patch but will need to remove the old patch first.

Is there a safe way of removing the old patch?

Cheers

Mick

I don't think you can remove the patch. If the patch was applied properly, you'd probably do more damage trying to remove it. The glue basically "welds" the fabric/plastic together.

From experience and experimenting... Do not remove the old patch... must try to get a larger patch over the old patch and that is not easy either. See if the dealer would make the repair for you. They will be best equipped to do it right... Good Luck

Thanks Gas Yakker and Thinwater skinner,

It was the local dealer who did the path in the first place!

I spoke to one of the Hobie in-country support reps and he gave the following options:

1. Run a bead of glue around the patch and let dry for 12 hours.

2. If it still leaks, deflate the kayak and heat the area with a hair dryer to loosen the patch. Clean the area with acetone and fit new patch.

Luckily, Option 1 seemed to do the trick, at least for the time being.

Has anyone tried the hair dryer?

Cheers

Mick

That's interesting. I thought the glue acted like PVC cement, basically melting the surfaces of the fabrics, & they fused together after drying.

I wonder if you can remove glued on accesories the same way? I'd love to move the paddle clips closer to the handle, or just get rid of them.
