I'm driving our to LA this weekend, so obviously I'm bringing my new tandem island for its first sail in the Pacific.

Do any of you SoCal islanders have advice on where to go? My tentative plan is to put in inside the sheltered harbor in Long Beach in order to avoid the surf zone and head out from there.

Any other suggestions?

I'm an experienced sailor, but the TI is new and I have very little open-ocean time. The wind forecast is tame (~11 knots) so I'm not too concerned, but advice is welcome.

Byron

Long beach is the best launch area. You can launch up near Cabrillo beach or down at the southern end. Nice facility at Claremont Launch Ramp. 5300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach.

Heads-up. This weekend is the Long Beach Grand Prix.
Alamitos Bay would be a good choice.

The Newport Aquatic Center is also a good place to launch out of to explore the back bay and the Newport Beach harbor

Huntington Harbor is also a good place to explore launching from the little beachs at the entrance to each of the islands, Humbolt, Davenport, and Trinidad, or there's a boat launch at Sunset Aquatic Marina.
