Hi all, bit of background first,
I have recently purchased a new TI after sailing a Hobie 16 for many years, main reason for the TI purchase was because it is more user friendly for solo camping/cruising trips than the somewhat over powered H16.
Anyway, in 2 weeks I will be taking the TI on its shakedown camping expedition, 7 nights island hopping through Keppel Bay off the QLD coast. I am well setup with camping / safety gear, but I'm not sure what sort of spare parts I should take for the TI. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Rudder pins are an obvious answer, how many would you take?
What other spare parts would you take?

Cheers, DAVE

Welcome to the forum Dave. Looking forward to seeing your trip report. I'm sure we can help you out. What are the expected weather condition for that period ?

Weather conditions I am expecting, 15 - 20 knots SE, likely to be 10 -15 knots SE, pretty consistent trade winds blow through the region. Keppel Bay is relatively shallow so short choppy conditions can come up, usually pretty benign conditions. Sunny with mid 20 temps, dropping to 15ish over night. Hoping for no rain 8)

Jealous? Me? You lucky bugger, I reckon that has got to be a perfect playground for a TI, AND there are heaps of supermodels already there!

I'd take a spare stubby holder for sure - it can get hot up there.

Suggestions:
a couple of shackles
about ten metres of 5-6 mm cord for temporary fixes
A couple of hull bungs
A couple of spare brace bolts
lin from mast area to centres of amas, to prevent sudden folding on of amas if brace bolt breaks.

Thanks for the info guys, not much point taking a stubby holder, wont have any refridgeration with me, and I dont plan on going anywhere near the touristy area, and no one likes warm beer

So if I took, say, 4 rudder pins and 4 brace bolts and a couple of bungs, I should get through about a week on the water, Im only cruising and not intending to push the TI hard at all.

Anything else that may be usefull?

I'm sure others will come to your rescue with a list. Kayak Bob, Nohuhu, Chekika I know have detailed lists. Where as I use the other approach of I going by memory and forget 1/2 of it. I usually remember it when it's too late.

I have my very own McGivor pack with :
Duck tape
Occo straps
I have a steel split pin for a rudder pin to use as a last resort.
Cable ties of all lengths and sizes
spare suncream
spare sunglasses
spare hat
spare panadol
spare knife
matches shrink wrapped
batteries shrinkwrapped
torch shrinkwrapped
and all tools like a small pair of vice grips ( invaluable )
allen keys
screw drivers

Hope this helps.

Back from an awesome trip around the Keppels.

Got off to a bumpy start however. I stayed the night in a cabin at Yeppoon after the 800+km road trip (11 hours). The next morning I have packed the TI and am just about ready to drive down to the boat ramp for launch, when i notice some funny looking white balls in the bottom of the mast tube. I realised they have all fallen out of the mast collar (never realised they could come out). Now had to completely unpack and disassemble the TI so I can roll it on its side to get them out. Once I put them back in their holder, I realise 4 are missing somewhere in the last 800km  Not wanting to postpone my trip, I raced around Yeppoon looking for a similar alternative. Eventually I resorted to some fishing sinkers (really good quality sperical ones the same size as the Hobie bearings) I hit them with a bit of sandpaper to smooth them out a bit and put it all together. Clearly not a long term fix but it got me through the trip without any damage. Crisis averted.

Visited Humpy Island, Great Keppel Island, Middle Island and Miall Island. All were amazing places, made for Hobie Islands. Im not a big fisherman myself, but I noticed other campers/fishers were pulling in some pretty decent fish, next time Ill be prepared with a decent offshore fishing setup.

Beaches were predominantly fine sand, with the odd coral patches around low tide, had no problems landing the TI. All Islands had the usual sandfly/midgies buzzing around, but a bit of spray dealt with them, although Humpy island had some mutant sized mosquitoes.

Weather was perfect, mid 20s during the day, and not much less at night. Winds were always from between S/E and S/W 10-15 knots,TI just loved the weather.

Heres some pics

I can definately recommend the Keppel Bay region. I will definately be back again :D

We are all envious of your trip Dave. What a spot. Shot 5 would be a good one for here

11 hour drive including rest/petrol stops. Wasn't rushing either as I was towing the TI behind the little Excel (1500cc and gutless) :D
I live in Ocean Shores, bout 35 mins south of the QLD border.

Thanks for that great trip report Dave. Been up that way a few times, but before we discovered Hobie's. The Capricorn Coast and the Whitsundays would be the perfect Hobie destination.
On my bucket list.

Hi Dave - what a lovely trip! Well done with the mast balls and thinking outside the square. Just a few questions....

Did you need any of the Hobie spares you took?
Did you put your car and trailer in a secure park?
Did you use a tent or hammock or swag?

I've yet to do my first trip but anticipate Moreton Bay / west side of Moreton Island, Gt Sandy Straits / north west Fraser. I live in Brisbane.
Would love to read details of the gear people are using. Don't know if I can go a week without a beer though!
Thanks.

I'd also like to know Dave what type of camping you did on your trip and the food you ate.

In here are some pics and data of what some of us are doing Johno. viewtopic.php?f=70&t=13400

( P.S there is always room for 1 or 2 beers )
