Hello Forum

I'm Steve from the UK. First time on the forum and first time owning a Hobie 16. Sailed cats before (Dart 18) but the Hobie looks excellent fun. :P

Just finished rigging my H16 (2002) over the weekend for the first time and I've noticed that there isn't enough space between the jib leech and the mast for the jib to pass to the other side without brushing against the mast.

Is this normal on the Hobie 16 or have I made some errors in rigging up.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks, Steve.

Totally normal. Sometimes in light air you will have to help it out by pushing it across. Well. Push it forward so it can move across before sheeting in.

When the wind kicks up you will not have any issues.

One thing you can do to help is after hooking the main halyard, take it around behind the trap wires and shroud before cleating it off. It gets one more thing out of the way.

Hi

Thanks for your reply and advice. No adjustments necessary then! More time for sailing - hope the weather holds for next weekend!

Cheers, Steve.

Also, the best thing to do when tacking is to leave the jib cleated until you've completed the tack and set the main, it will likely backfill, but that is good, it helps complete the turn, then uncleat and if there is wind in it, it will pop right over to the other side, no mucking necessary. I solo my 16 most the time and this is the best way that I've found to tack it. Super easy... if you have crew, I generally instruct them to move to at least the middle before they even think about uncleating it, as you want to get the turn mostly completed before messing with the jib or you will end up in irons.

That makes sense. I kept blowing. Tacks yesterday, today I was waiting for the bow to start coming about before I would let the jib loose.

Definitely back wind the jib...once your fully turned you should sheet in the jib 1st though then the main. Or you can end up turning back into the wind with the weather vane effect of the main.

We also shave our battens quite thin. MAkes them more flexible.

Try trimming the battens so you dont have so much sticking out at the leach.

I really like the batten hinge set really helps bring the jib over
