Went out yesterday to put "Flop Jack" thru her paces after the mods. New 22mm Harken traveler, shortened shrouds and longer forestay (block to block on main), Harken Carbo Ratchet Low profile Blocks and new Jib. needless to say, she is way over powered now for the 28-33's I was in yesterday. Couple of observations; 1. If you dump, get away from the tramp as it will come down and turtle on your head in just a few seconds. You DON"T want to be trapped under it. It WILL turtle in big wind. 2. If you're going to be stupid and attempt a jibe, at least try to do it right. Good luck on that one in sustained 30+! 3. If it turtles, don't panic. Contrary to what many say, you will be able to right it from turtle in 60 seconds or less. Just grab the righting line, sit on the leeward hull (feet on tramp), lean back and be patient. She WILL come! Air temp-45 degrees. Water temp- 50 degrees. Snowing as I was coming off the water. A perfect day! :D

She's fast. So fast it felt like the whole boat was going to fly apart! Not joking!
Aside from my left ankle swollen like a baseball, It was a great day!

Great action in the video! - I think that in that much wind you would be way happier with the balance of the boat if you move the jib leads out - you are seriously choking off the main with them pulled in like you have them... all the way out to the inside edge of the hull would be the correct angle in that much breeze.

Looks too cold for my liking though :)

It was blowing so hard that I had to keep the jib sheeted in as I was pointing only a few degrees off the blow. At times almost dead nuts into the wind and still haulin' arse. The jib would have just luffed the entire time and probably torn itself to shreds. Traveler worked awesome and did exactly what it was supposed to do. Let her out, sheet in, flatten the main, straighten the mast and power up like a bat outta hell. Lovin' it! These boats are nuts!

I do think the jib is way too much in that air. I think I'm just going to build a blade jib for when it blows like that. The one currently is like a baby hooter for cryin' out loud!

Thank you for sharing this great video. I tried to analyse the jibe but I think I need some explanation here. Which force did actualy turn the boat over. Centrifugal maybe? If you look at 4:11 it is clearly seen that when the port hull took off, the main had still not been transfered to starboard side to push the boat to flip over.

Wow- steel-toed sailing boots. Good choice for an insane day like that.

Bringing a hard hat next time?
