I bought a new Adventure made in April, 2006 about two weeks ago. I used it twice and then installed the Fix Kit that I ordered from KFS. I used the Marine Goop to put the fiberglass part in and I used quite a bit of it over a wide area around where the fiberglass part goes.

I don't have any cracks or any leaks. I use the Adventure on Beaver Lake, Arkansas in pretty calm water except for motorboat wakes. I have installed the Turbo Fins, Sidekick and use the daggerboard with the sail.

Should I try to remove the fiberglass part and reinstall it with the epoxy or will this fix work for the long haul in my situation with the Marine Goop. Or, simply put, if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Or, I guess, fix it again?

I guess I acted too quickly on this....... :?

We were pretty convinced on the Goop for a boat that was not yet cracked. I think I would leave it. The stuff is tough. The only failure I have heard of are from trying to repair a boat that was already cracked.

Boats built recently should not need anything but maybe the longer bolts. All stock on hand had been converted last week. The molding process has been changed to cause the forward part of the drive well to have solid plastic, so the fiberglass cup and goop is not needed.

Hi Matt;
What does "recently" mean? My boat was built on 11/28/05. Is there a way to tell, by visual inspection, if the forward part of my drive well is solid plastic? I don't want to install the kit if I don't have to.

Also, can you post a photo of the retro kit installed in a drive well? I am a bit confused how the fibreglass fits.
Thanks

-Jonathan

Same here, mine was built in 05/06 Do I need to install the kit?

I installed the longer bolts but did not quite understand where the fiberglass part fits in. It did not fit particularly well at the bottom of the opening or the top...where's it supposed to go.

Agree that a pic would be nice!

Just another shout-out :o to Matt Miller for a more detailed instruction for the proper placement of the fiberglass drive well strengthening insert for Outback and Adventure kayaks. :?:

Review the first post for detailed information about which boats should use the kit.

I've had the "goop" version in for about 7 weeks now. Since then, the Adventure has had temperature changes, pounding chop, sailing and lots of miles of Turbofin abuse over several outings.

I inspected the fibreglass patch and cam shaft columns today -- everything looks 100% solid. Epoxy might be better but, if your bond is holding up, it's doing exactly the same job as the epoxy! Just look in on it from time to time.... 8)

Wow, what a dunce  I thought it was an external installation...not inside the hull. Thanks double "R" ... great photo.

Just sez older than 03 models would not use the bolt portion of the kit.
Still confused.

" # 81410011 MirageDrive Well Retrofit (For Outbacks and Adventures only. Outbacks [older] (corrected by admin) than July of 2003 would not use the bolts part of the kit. "

Does this mean all past that yr needs the kit?

Yes. Since your Outback was built 5-06, then it was built more recently than July, '03; you need to install the full kit (longer bolts and fibreglass plug). If you had an older Outback, built before hull # ----3753H-03, you should install the fibreglass plug, but not the included bolts. At least that's the way I read it. 8)

Thanks Roadrunner. I'm going to do just as you say and leave my fix in with the Marine Goop and check on it from time to time. My Adventure is still fine with no cracks and no leaks anywhere and zero water in the hull. Use it about every day for a couple hours a day.
