How do you know when the stoppers on your mast step are worn too much.Hobie use to sell a kit with insert to adjust mast rotation on a 16 ,is that still available ?

Don't think the kit would work on one of the new steps (since '04). I haven't seen any of those wear out.

Usually what wears are the "ears" on the mast base. Only fix for that is to replace it.

Over-rotation will de-power the sail. Mast will bend more.

With the '04 step, how is mast stepping changed? With my '00 I have to use the H14 hole on the Hobie stepping link, and it's still difficult. The step looks different than on my '78; was there a second change or might I already have the '04 step?

This is an old step:

The stops are not badly worn, but you can tell they were carrying a lot of mast rake, since there's a lot of wear on the aft edge.

This is a new step:

Notice how beefed up the stops are?

Thanks that's a really helpful comparison. It looks like the newer casting is significantly more slanted toward the step hinge. Is that just the way it looks in the picture, or was it changed to accommodate additional mast rake?

Here is a picture showing that the worn step rotated 60 degrees past center, while the new one was 50 degrees. That 10 degree diff I viewed as too much for effective pointing.

Very interesting. Is the mast base a different part? What year boat was this?

Bruceway,
Still have it? I'm in need of one. Just bought, thought I was getting a deal, a '78 and getting a "to do" list together.

Need a trampoline too if anyone has a good reasonably priced one.

Thanks

What is the problem with taping up the mast step stops to prevent the stops from wearing, also will reduce mast rotation.Tried it with duck tape and seemed to work, and did not interfere with the mast rotating.
