Friendly reminder to: CHECK ALL YOUR SHACKLES! I pulled into Harmony Inn last night and notice my bridle wires were hanging down from each hull with only the U shape of the shackle still on one. What's missing? Forestay adjuster, 3 quick pins, a snap shackle. I realize how close I must have been to de-masting on the water yesterday if it was able to fall off while driving. This is the one shackle I never thought to check and re-tighten because I never touch it during normal operations. I can handle the loss of parts better than a falling mast and consider myself lucky. Just finished a 2 hr drive of shame looking for it with my hazard lights on with no luck, could still be hiding in a mud puddle along the way.

Everyone should have a pair of these:

One to wear and one in the toolbox, of course!
(And no, you can't order these anymore for $3.95 - this is a 1974 ad - she would need a much longer lanyard now  )

I agree with that but it doesn't matter that I have one, I just didn't look. All my fault no doubt!! I'm even the dumba** that carries a drill and big rivet gun, swagging tools and cables and lots of other stuff..... in my trailer box. Just didn't check it.
Now 3 weeks ago I helped a girl step her mast and as she was pinning the forestay, I looked down and realized the mast had come 1/2 way off the base while going up. I don't know how it didn't fall down while doing so. The mast had broken off at each of the two rivets. I was able to get it back in place and drilled new holes but that was close.

Use blue loctite on shackles that you don't normally remove.

Too funny!

$7.99 now... shipping and tax not included.

Hobie beats the average inflation rate over this period!

Quote:
$3.95 in 1974 had the same buying power as $19.63 in 2013.
Annual inflation over this period was 4.20%.

I guess I should raise the price? :)
