2 Outbacks on Subaru Impreza

Big concern with factory luggage rails... they can be pulled clear out of the car. We saw that happen to a SUV carrying a Hobie Wave years ago. Down a mountain grade with some head winds... rrrRRIP! Boat and racks went sliding down the highway on their own.

Yes, watch for rack load limits. Use bow and stern lines. Watch for windy conditions or closely passing semi trucks!

The load limit for the racks is 80kg and the two outbacks are about 60kg.

One AI or 1 Oasis is the limit for my Imprezza.

I'm trying to work out how to transport my boats with the MX-5. Might have to fit it with a tow bar;)

any other pics of subie car toppers? thinking of taking my revo 13 on a 500 mile trip with me on my 2013 impreza sport with oem rails and cross bars. just flipping the boat upseide down on the rails and tying her up

But, how much additional load is caused by the wind whipping everything around? Even though I weigh 190 lbs, you wouldn't see me riding in the kayak on top of the car without it being tied down Tie down the bow and stearn are key to transporting any kayak on any rack system.

I tried Yakima Bowdowns (J type rack) when I first got my two Rev 13s… The load was just at the manufacturer weight limit on my factory rack (Maybe a few pounds over). We ran into some high winds and by the time I got home I noticed that my cross bars had almost worked their way loose…

It looked like the kayaks were acting as ‘sails’ and rocking the crossbars back and forth so much that that the factory crossbars just could not cope…

If the kayak is lying flat and not on its side maybe you won’t have an issue? Be careful… I switched out the factory rack to an aftermarket and have not had an issue since (Also ditched the Bowdowns and lay them flat now instead of on their side.).
