With very nice sailing winds predicted for tomorrow, I was giving my equipment a check over and noticed that my TI sail was nearly completely torn away from the fabric mast topper section. This would explain the weird wrinkles I’ve had in the sail lately.

No idea what caused it, but I couldn’t stand the thought of missing what is sure to be one of our last really good windy days until fall. So I attempted a temporary repair. It might be something that would benefit somebody else if a similar scenario happened to them.

Tom did you get a chance to test out the repair yet?

I was interested in your solution and that the shear strength of glued material was strong enough - especially hot melt glue - who would have thought?

I sailed it Sunday in some pretty brisk winds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3rjIQLSgXs

It was fine. I can't find any evidence that anything came loose or slipped. And, all the funky wrinkles I had been seeing along the sail are mostly gone now.

Looked like it was handling the pressure well Tom. I enjoyed your hat recovery sequence and the dry humor with it

I've almost given up wearing a hat in these things.

My hat has a length of cord with a s/steel spring clip at the end which attaches to my pfd strap - saved my hat many times especially when tacking and the sail brushes the hat of my head.

Besides, losing a hat is great MOB practice!

The inside stuff is usually done with a little Fuji Finepix camera. Not fancy, not exactly high quality video.

Tom I was talking about the one where you are on the water testing out your sail repair. Where on the boat and what sort of mount are you using to hold the camera while you are sailing? Is it something you made or bought? I would like to eventually be able to shoot some video like this eventually. Thanks

Okay, that's a Drift Ghost. I've tried several various cameras and this is the one I've settled upon. I can't say enough positive things about it.

If you do a search on cameras or videos here you should turn up a ton of information on the various brands that folks here use.

By the way, the sail continues to hold up well. I used it again today and so far, so good.

Hobie declined to replace the damaged sail under warranty (less than one year old, used less than 15 times, citing the damage as "normal wear and tear") so I'll get to see just how long this repair will hold up.

Most likely I'll look into getting a new sail but I want one that'll last longer than just a few months. If that's all these are good for I'm going to look at some aftermarket or custom sail makers and see what I can come up with. In the meantime, I'll find out just how dependable hot melt glue is when used on a sail - it's already proven to be better than the original stitching. How long it'll last remains to be seen.

Was trying to find the "Slo Mo" sails company but a search didn't turn them up. Maybe I have the name wrong. Anybody have the actual name or a link? Thanks.
