I have the 1984 Olympic Edition Hobie 16. Somewhat embarrasingly, I do not know the difference between a comp tip and whatever the opposite of a comp tip is. I have the original mast. Can anyone tell me whether I have a comp tip and what it is all about? Thanks.

From the picture it looks like you don't have a comptip. The comptip mast is a two piece mast with the bottom being aluminum, like the old one, and the top being fiberglass. The old mast has a single sheave at the top for the main halyard to run through and the comptip has two sheaves. It appears that you have the single sheave.

You should be able to tell pretty easily if your mast is one or two pieces.
