What kind of suspension does the hobie kayak trailer have? Spring or torsion?

Thanks.

None. Straight axle with a couple rubber pads between the axle and trailer frame.

Wow!!!

I figured they would have something for shock absorption.

I guess its so light it doesn't need it.

Kind of tough on the boat, depending on the boat, of course.

I guess people just deal with it and it doesn't cause any issues!!!!

Are there any good alternatives to the hobie trailer for the tandem island?

Depends on the model. Mine is the double-double, made for two TI's and has leaf springs.

The rubber pads Tom describes are on the AI trailer. The TI trailer has leaf springs.

Can you mount any sort of mast storage box on the double trailer for the TI, or do you have to go to a double-double for that?

I know it's from a while ago, but this has worked well for me with just a few changes to the overall design since I first built it. viewtopic.php?f=69&t=35469
Good luck.

I converted a john boat trailer to kayak trailer. I removed 1 of 2 leaf springs on each side. It seems just right for kayak(s) weight. I feel the constant road vibration & bumps cant be good for hulls and decks. So I believe in trailer suspension to accommodate kayaks.
