Hello everybody! After three years of owning a 21SC (enjoyed it lot, took it to Baja) I bought a 2011 Getaway and I'm thrilled. It's a fantastic design, everything is simpler and lighter, the fun factor is the same or more, and friends who sailed it have asked me if it's faster than the 21. I know it can't be, but it feels faster. (May be the go-kart thing, smaller seems faster.)

I don't have any experience racing catamarans, so I would like to ask if someone can tell me how, in say 10 knots, they carry the traveler, and if anybody has a pic of how the main should look, that'll be great.

One thing that surprised me is that's easier to tack than the 21, without the complication of centerboards.

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't use the main traveler all that much. If we are in strong winds with low crew weight, I will let the traveler ride out to minimize having to work the main sheet too much. Sometimes on a reach I also will let the traveler out, especially I'm strong winds. But normally I keep it in close and just work the main sheet. Hope you are enjoying your Getaway! Holland.

I am somewhat new to Hobie sailing, but I am with Hyoung. I don't use the main traveler that much either, except when on a broad reach/downwind sail or coming into shore/dock and I want to hit the brakes-I let it all the way out to slow down.

I use the traveler. On a reach I set a little more than a foot off center. When I'm close hauled I center the traveler, I let it out when running with the wind. If you use the traveler then you can keep your sail nice and tight, getting the most out of it.

No Getaway here, but I did have a traveler fitted to my Wave. I enjoy letting it out a bit when doing a broad reach or even mostly all the way if I really have to do a straight run downwind, for just a minute or two, when I'm trying to get through the channel from my bay to the ocean. You can get dizzy trying to tack/jibe your way through there as it's pretty narrow.

I also used it to lessen the power when trying to go close hauled on a windy day that I really should have had no business being out there. It certainly paid for itself that day.

Edit:
Also, with no jib on my wave, it makes me 'feel' like I have more to do.

Thanks for the info, guys! I'll see if I can scare another Getaway owner at the club to go out and do some informal racing, best way to see what works.
