Just curious to see if any Forum Members use a cooler as poling platform and if so, what make/size? I fish the NMZ and Mosquito Lagoon in Central Fl and am looking to gain some height to see the fish better. Thanks in advance!

Okay, I will be the first to say it!
You must have spectacular balance.

During our annual Kayak Rigging Clinic there was a PA14 with a custom poling platform in place of the seat. It was bolted to the floor. It was about the size of a Wally world 50ish qt Igaloo.

One thing I've considered building (but haven't done so yet) is a platform that I can place ON the seat itself. Simply level the seat base, place a well-designed board across it and stand on that. You choose to have the seat on its low or high settings.

Much easier to carry a board than a cooler, unless you're carrying the cooler anyway …

Cheers,
Graeme

Ty has a video on how he does it on YouTube.

I hope that link works.

If not, search hobie pro angler - push poling.

I watched and am humbled by his agility. I didn't see how he actually fishes once he spots a fish. Presumably he is alone so he has to somehow grab a rod and cast to the fish while holding position. Pretty impressive.

I have a 96 qt Moeller cooler and I put an excersise mat under it and it feels like a dance floor. It's 18" tall 18" wide and 35" long. My feet end up being 2' above water line so the view is really nice for a kayak.

I have fished Guana Lake in Jacksonville many times from my PA 14 while standing atop a 50qt igloo on the rear deck. It does take balance but its not too bad. I keep my rod either in one of the molded in rod holders or between my legs while poling with the Hobie paddle. When I spot a fish I snap the paddle into the paddle holder I have mounted on my belt, and in ready to cast to the fish. The nice thing about Guana lake is its not more than a couple feet deep and there are no oysters. There are quite a few over grown marsh lizards in there though!!

I love my Yeti! But I am a little to big to try to stand on it in my Kayak, hehehe.

I use a Yeti 35 tundra in place of my seat on my 2012 pa 14 as a polling platform. The 45 qt won't fit on the 2012s but will on the 2013s. As for ease of use, the more practice, the easier it gets!

I stand on the outer edges of my Vantage seat while using a 17 ft SuperStick push pole without any problems. I even use the pole like a giant paddle while standing on the seat to make short runs between flats.

I put the seat in the highest position and just stand on that... I also use an 8' stake out pole... the pole has a foam wrap around the base near the foot which allows me to control the rudder with it as well... it's make poling 100x's better when you can just steer with a rudder and the peddle drive pulled up. I have a video somewhere... I'll see if I can find it.

NickyD, what it your youtube name? I would like to check out your vids. Also as far as the 45qt fitting the 2013 is the cooler placed in the rear tank well or in the vantage seat position?
