My old fishfinder crapped out and I bought a Lowrance Elite 4 DSI. The base has 4 mounting holes but I can only position it to where I can get 2 bolts in the mounting board without drilling into the hull. Will appreciate any and all suggestions.

I tried my new Lowrance Elite 4 DSI fish finder out today and was very disappointed. After catching 2 bass, and fiddling with it for 2 hours, I still could not see it very good at all, unusable. Then I came home and read the manual and learned how to set the backlight. It was set on level 3 and when I set it to level 10, it was much better, but still dim in bright sunshine in the driveway. Any comments on this model??? Thanks.

U mean I will like the Ram mount or the Elite 4 DS? I rigged it temporarily and could not see it well with backlight set at level 3 on the lake. When I got home, i read the manual and found how to set the backlight at level 10 and it seems ok, but not so good in direct, bright, sun light in my driveway.

You did not say anything about a RAM mount. I was referring to the Elite 4DS. With that said, I mounted mine with a small RAM mount on the closest left corner of the mounting board. I decided it was too far away and eventually added an extension so now it is closer to me. I like it much better that way. I can also see it much better in the sunlight this way. This also gets the unit out of the way if I have to paddle when the weeds are too thick to use the mirage drive.

I am reminded of an old quote my dad taught me.

I bought the original RAM mount on eBay and I think that mount is just short of 4" long. I went on eBay and bought another 1" ball and another mounting arm that is slightly longer and connected them together. That brings the unit close enough so I do not have to lean forward to push buttons and I can bend it due to the extra joint to any position I want. I love this setup and I got it dirt cheap.
