I can't wait to hear Russell Coutts explain how they dialed their boat in, in 8 straight wins is unbelievable!

Big news in NZ:

Image

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/ar ... d=11130421 some interesting thoughts on the Dalton headline.

What a great effort by NZ. And I'm impressed the support put in by their country and media.

What... New Zealand can't afford another run? Seriously? What the hell was the plan then if they were the defenders?

H16's????

They don't even know what the next time around is going to be run on... ain't it a bit early for this kind of talk?

Whatever... I am really looking foward to another AC "Worlds Series" type event and hope Dean Barker is there.. I really like that guy...

Quote from Larry Ellison at post-race press conference today: "I think a lot of people who were never interested in sailing suddenly got interested in sailing. I think a lot of young kids are going to go out now and try sailing. They might jump on a Hobie Cat rather than a Laser, who knows . . ."

Seems like a great opportunity to make inroads into yacht club and community sailing youth programs.

I think what New Zealand is saying it that they now know they can't afford to spend the amount of money it takes to win, after making a valiant effort, but finding out the hard way.

Around here, the only people who watched and cared were people already involved in sailing. We sure enjoyed it in this household. We had people watching the last race with us, who do sail some, but they didn't understand what was going on up the beat, and could not understand our excitement when Oracle crossed on port.

Ellison and Coutts have both said the AC72 design cannot be sustained. Although they realized their vision of large ultra high performance racing, they want the future of the Cup to be inclusive and accessible to a larger number of teams. That requires a smaller design. That 130' wing mast alone was a huge expense.

That said, the days of light air racing in monhulls off Newport will never return. That's a good thing for the sport. There is a growing interest in bringing back the nationality requirement for future teams, where all active members must be from the country of origin for the boat. Sure there will be some skirting of the rules, an 18 month residency for example, but hopefully it will foster the development of home grown competitors. Something sorely needed in the U.S.

I have had about 6 different friends in the last 24 hours.... who know little about sailing.... No real interest at all other than they know it is something I am passionate about.... They have called me and asked if I saw the America's Cup...

It was fun letting them tell the story..

The wind is howling in October around here.. I can't wait to get these guys on my boat
