Are they suppose to have play?I can,t remember.I am going over my 2006 Hobie to see what is worn and needs replacing.Does not seem to effect the overall stiffness of rudder steering when connected to tiller.

End caps loose in the tiller arms? Any added play / slop will effect toe-in while sailing.

I am talking about the caps Hobie 20 style caps on the end of rudders tiller arm that attach to the tiller crossbar.
The other question is if they are loose and need to be tightened ,how do you do it?

There is a bolt inside the end fitting. You would have to remove the fitting (rivets) to get at it. May be in with Loc Tite too, but would be adjustable if you can get it apart.

Parts guide shows it: http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/H14-16_Parts.pdf

Top / middle page two.

So that cap should be tight?

Should pivot with a little resistance. That takes the lateral slop out.

In function, it needs to pivot a few degrees to reduce load in the fittings when the rudders are hard over. France uses the same parts on the Tiger and they tightened it down, but the tiller arms were a little different.

Cool! I wish I'd taken pictures of the final product; I don't know why I didn't. Maybe was in a rush to get back on the water. :)

In my case I think I didn't even have to heat it. It was not loose by any means, though.

Matt, the diagram lists two washers: the 8080681 and the 8080691. I only found one (the white nylon-looking one in my picture). What is the other and where does it go?

8080691 WASHER 3/8 X 3/4 NYLON-FLAT

8080681 WASHER 5/16 X 1/2 X .030 NYLON

Second one is the small one that rests on the connector pin. Between / bearing-for the tiller crossbar and the tiller arm.

Thanks! I don't have any washers there, so I guess they will be on my next order. So it's washer, tiller end, and then clip. Are they tight enough on the posts that they stay in place?
