I am buying a Pro Angler 14 and live in NJ. Do I need to register my PA14? I don't understand the wording on the Marine Bureau's Website.

It states that "All power vessels and any vessel longer than 12' must be registered. Vessels are registered by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (609)292-6500."

But the NJ DMV Website states: "MVC issues motorboat and personal watercraft licenses for use on fresh, non-tidal waters or lakes, creeks or rivers not affected by tidal conditions. A boat license and New Jersey boat safety certificate is required to operate a power vessel or personal watercraft - jet ski or waverunner - on non-tidal waters of New Jersey. A boat license is not required for non-powered vessels."

So do I have to register my Kayak? Would I need insurance? If so where can I get it insured.

Per the New Jersey State Police Boating Safety Manual, registration is not required for non-powered kayaks or canoes.

I called NJ Motor Vehicle today and I asked them and they advised me that yes I would need to register the Pro Angler. I was shocked.

Once again, it says right on the NJ MVC website, unpowered canoes and kayaks do not need to be registered.
