I was thinking of replacing that hatch bungee hold down piece with a curved plastic J hook piece. Like the ones in Dog's third and fourth photos. I think it will function just as the original as a place to hold the hatch bungee, and the curved part will help with the spray shield. If it gets yanked loose too often, it wouldn't be a big deal to drill a small hole through the J part to add a cable tie, or maybe some other easily removable pin so that the hatch bungee is easily accessible.

If the J hook isn't big enough to hold it all, I was thinking I could just stack it on top of the existing Hobie hatch bungee holder and use a longer bolt..

does that make sense?

Running the loop of cord under the hatch hold down seems to work well. I just came up with an idea to try a button wire-tied to the Sprayskirt on each side to put the loop over as a quick connect/disconnect at the hatch. With the bungee sitting above it while in use, it should be very secure.

On the bungee being pulled off, unlikely. But even if it did, you still have the bungee on the other side holding it down. With the loops under the hatch hold, no forces against the bungee to unhook. If you are worried about extreme wind or wave forces, think about adding nuts on the bolts on the hatch holds as they are just screwed into plastic (no hardware).

If the button works, the only permanent attachments left is a wire-tie on the right at the sheetline pulley, and a wire-tie on the left side to the aka crossbar mount.

I am assuming you are familiar with the quick release type wire ties ( I still think of them as Ty-Wraps), the reusable ones with the tab releases.

Yep, but I haven't tried them on Sprayskirt installs.

Sorry, somehow I missed your post. :o

The TI Sprayskirts are 4 inches shorter that the AI Sprayskirts. Otherwise, very similar in cut.

I hope this helps.

Hi Bob,

I purchased a set of spray skirts off you for my AI a fair while back. Some stuff was happening that took me away from my Kayak so the skirts have been sitting in a box since then. Today I thought I would finally go and install them, but they appear to be too short??

Image

Stretched tight, they just reach the front of the akas. I was trying to work out what I was doing wrong as the install instructions were not matching up to what I was seeing. Now reading this post it looks like you may have sent me TI skirts instead of AI ones??

Nope, those are AI Sprayskirts. During install, they will be stretched 15-20%. My AI Sprayskirts are much tighter than my TI Sprayskirts, as they are much closer to the water. Installed tightly, you can plane off the Sprayskirt at speed in chop (like I'm doing in the center AI in the picture below in my signature).

If you have a ram-ball mount on both sides, you can just wrap the rear Sprayskirt loop twice around each sides ball, instead of screwing the strap pieces to the pockets. If doing it this way, I mount the Sprayskirt fronts with the anchor-shackle first, and then stretch each side (one at a time) to each ram ball. It will take a lot of stretch to install but no one has broken one yet installing. :)

It will turn out fine. Any questions, just ask here or send me an email.

Thanks Bob, I'll go and give it a bit more muscle and stretch them.

All done Bob. :D

It took some huffing and cussing, but all fitted for a test sail in the morning.

Thanks

Great! Have a good test sail and let me know how it works for you. Maybe Pic's? :)

John, some of it is technique.

Using your strongest hand, grab the end of the skirt,(including any tabs, mesh and lines together) and pull all those to stretch the tramp. Use the other hand to more gently stretch the remaining line around the anchor point.

It's easier to do this way and will not tear the skirts (which is possible to do if you only bear down on the end of the lines).

Same method to release them.

I forgot to take a photo before I packed the kayak up on the trailer. I'll grab one tomorrow down at the lake.

KB's skirts definitely get the fashion style award, but my miniskirts don't require any huffing & puffing to set up. The bungee cord tensions the skirt. http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&start=285, http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&start=300, & http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&start=300

I'm still at 9500' in the Rockies. It was 19 deg F this morning; so, I'm definitely thinking of warm S FL and testing my miniskirts.
