I bought an 1981 18 for some retirement fun and after sailing a few times find I am washing bits of what looks like styrofoam out the drain hole of one hull. I can't recall where or if there is a block of styro foam inside the hulls of a 18 for floation incase of an accidental hole. I also am finding bits of clear crumbling PE sheet washing out. Any guess why? Old vacume bag or what. I recall in my former racing life guys would remove anything they could (except the beer) to shead a few pounds. No flotaion foam in this boat up front that I can see via the ports. Was there flotation foam in a stock 18 in the hulls and where? Thanks

All Hobie Cats have positive flotation built in. On the Hobie 18 it is aft if the dagger well.

The foam was bagged, so that is what you are finding now. Foam bits and bag bits.

Thanks Matt, I will try to wash out the loose stuff so things drain well. I will assume the foam remaining is sufficent. I have recently begun sailing again out of O' harbour to find blue water so it is good to know it will float just in case. So far I have seen 0 other cats in the local waters but I know it is winter. More boating time on shore working the bugs out of this old boat but that is fun too. This week working on a soft spot on a starboard deck. Hopefully back in the water next week.
On a side note: Looking for a decent 16 or 18 to trailor around the big island if you know someone that might have a boat there they could sell or share. Joined the Hilo yauht club just before they lost all their Hobie gear to theives. What Timing
Thanks Again
