Finally did just that. Drilled out the two rivets at the back and popped off the plastic cover.
Back at the front end of the boom. Found out the plastic piece has a metal sleeve that the sliding metal rod (don't know the technical name) that connects the boom to the mast slides in. Anyway, you can't really drill out the rivets in the normal fashion as you can't punch the rivet threw. I just drilled out and removed the old rivet and installed new aluminum rivets (since the plastic fitting fits so tight). There is no way that bugger is coming out unless you destroy the whole piece.
On to the next project, tighten the tramp and get some sailing in over the holidays
