Dear Hobie sailors,

The IHCA is pleased to announce the 20th Hobie 16 Worlds will be at Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia. The world championship event will take place in Australia in 2014 with the opening ceremony on January 31 and competition continuing through to the open finals and closing ceremony on February 15.

Hobie Cat Australasia has been able to secure the world championships for the region with the support of the New South Wales state government through its events promotion arm Destination New South Wales and the Shoalhaven City Council via Shoalhaven Water and Shoalhaven Holidays.

In more exciting news and show of strength of the largest multihull class in the world, Hobie Cat Company will announce an additional two more Hobie 16 World Championships in the next five years. That is a total of three Hobie 16 Worlds in five years . Again showing the strength of the Hobie Class and the great support by the Hobie Cat manufacturers.

Member for the South Coast, Shirley Hancock, has announced that Huskisson, Jervis Bay, New South Wales, will welcome a record number of entrants for the world’s largest Hobie 16 World Championships, held from Friday 31 January to Saturday 15 February 2014. The Hobie 16 World Championships is the pinnacle competition for the largest and most popular catamaran class in the world.

More than 365 teams, comprising almost 500 competitors from 27 countries will battle it out during the 16-day sailing regatta on the idyllic waters of Jervis Bay.

A single class, multi-hull event, the regatta ensures a level playing field for competitors, where all will be sailing in identical Hobie catamarans.

“This is great news for our community, and we look forward to welcoming the competitors and visitors to our beautiful region for the 20th Hobie 16 World Championships,” Ms Hancock said.

“With previous World Championships hosted in Canada, Mexico, New Caledonia, South Africa, Spain, United Arab Emirates and The Virgin Islands, Jervis Bay is in good company hosting this truly global event.”

Steve Fields Managing Director of Hobie Cat Australasia said: "These are fantastic numbers. With the consistent winds making Jervis Bay one of the world’s top 5 sailing locations, add to that kangaroos and the natural beauty of the Shoalhaven region as well as the whole Aussie small town experience, it's no wonder we're looking at being the World’s largest Hobie 16® World Championships!”

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The NSW Government, through Destination NSW, is delighted to support the Hobie 16 World Championships as part of our commitment to promote Regional NSW events.

“Destination NSW estimates the event will deliver an economic impact of close to $3.4 million. In addition, around 60 of the Hobie 16 Catamarans have been built locally in Jervis Bay, injecting in excess of $750,000 into the local economy before the event even begins,” Mr Souris said.

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase said: “The Hobie 16 World Championships will attract local and international visitors and provide the perfect opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and pristine waters of the Shoalhaven area. As the pinnacle competition for this catamaran class in the world, we are thrilled to be hosting it in NSW.”

A seriously great venue. The Australian dollar is dropping against the US dollar making it easier to come. Visitors might want to consider one-way tickets such is the beauty of the area.
Of course, be ready for a flogging from the Aussie sailors
