FL - Charlotte Bay, Florida

I'm looking for a boat ramp on Charlotte bay where over-night trailer parking is allowed (fee is OK) where I can rig my Getaway and leave it on the trailer for two weeks. Anybody know of a place like this?

It cost only $6 per day (boat,trailer and tow vehicle). They have a large parking lot with plenty of room.

I was looking to sail in Charlotte bay because it looked large enough to sail in but still protected, and not a lot of boat traffic. But the marina you mentioned looks a long way away. When you launch from there where do you sail? Placida Harbor? Gasparilla Sound? Or do you go out in the ocean? Anything you can tell me about sailing in that area would be very helpful. Thanks.

I took a drive over to the marina to check it out. I talked to an older blonde woman and told her what I was looking for and she said I couldn't leave my boat on the trailer overnight there. Is it another marina you were thinking of?

Launch from Bokeelia County Ramp on the north end of Pine Island, that would be my second choice........let me know if that is better.

Thanks Bill. The ramp at Pine Island looks like it will work. They allow overnight parking, but only have 23 spots. That could fill up pretty fast.

What can you tell me about sailing in that area? Is it best to stay in Charlotte Bay or do you go out into the gulf? How long does it take to get to the gulf from the marina? Is there a lot of boat traffic (and choppy water caused by wake)? Anything you can tell me about sailing in that area would be a great help. Thanks.

The Bokeelia ramp is way up a canal, no motor=no fun (google lee county boat ramp, click the dot and it shows a map) Try Pineland Marina ($$$). Still a good sail in skinny water till Captiva Rocks and then Pine Island Sound. Depending on the day and weather may or may not have boat traffic. Get yourself a chart.

I'm going to check a couple of places for you tomorrow. Port Charlotte area.

I ended up launching from Tow Boat U.S. , Pine Island. They are located at the end of Porta Bello Street. Use the kayak ramp and leave a few bucks in there mailbox for ramp usage. The personnel with Tow Boat U.S. are great people to deal with. You can leave your tow vehicle and boat trailer there overnight for a small fee, very reasonable. You will sail through a tight pass and be right on Charlotte Harbor.

It's about 9 miles to Cayo Costa State Park. That is where we camped all week. I beached my 21SE on the west side of the island the first night and was ask by park personnel to overnight it on the west side of the island at Pelican Bay (north end on bay) where there is a nice peninsula to beach your boat.
