Hey all,
Picked up a great '89 18SX last weekend. Hulls and rigging are awesome but original mylar sails totally shot as you might expect. Seems not a lot of used SX sails up for grabs so think I'm going to have to raid the piggy bank for a new set. I don't mind being race legal so looking at options, I've narrowed down to Peak Sails NA and Whirlwind. Price difference is about $600 and Whirlwind a little heavier cloth too. So here's my question:

I know Whirlwind would be awesome but that price difference is a lot. Conversely, it's hard to be super confident about Peak when you dig into the Google's and comments on this forum. So, has anyone had good experiences with Peak or should I just suck it up and spend the extra $ with Whirlwind? Any advice really really appreciated.
Thanks!
Phil

Chip Buck - the guy behind Whirlwind - used to be the head sailmaker at Hobie Cat. By all accounts, he does quality work and has great customer service.

add me as another vote for Whirlwind! Mine came with my boat, so I can't speak directly to their customer service, but the quality is great!

As for Peak Sails, read this thread, and the other ones linked to in it:

You get what you pay for.

Thanks all.
Ordered from Chip at Whirlwind. The extra $ hurt but likely not as much as never seeing my sails!

My 1989 SX18 (bought used 2010) also had the original Mylar's, and I suffered through one season before I ordered a custom set of Pentex from Chip. I have NEVER regretted my purchase. Email me off line at lunnjohn 'at' magma dot ca, and I'll gladly send you pictures... do remember to order tell tales, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

One more thing, consider replacing the shroud anchor pins.

Chip is great, he made my 18SX sails and at the end of the season I shipped them back and he made some modifications for free.
