Here in Missouri, sailboats are registered and kayaks are not. So, is the AI a sailboat or a kayak? Yes. But, after some serious digging I found out that, in Missouri, it is technically a sailboat. But, I confused a lot of folks before I finally found the info. Also, we have two AI's, one for me and one for my wife. Now, explaining to folks why we have two Hobie sailboats and they're both the same model??? I actually had some clerk remove one of them off our tax info because they figured it was a typo/clerical error.
It's really a confusing boat.

It can be confusing... The worst outcome of this we saw was chopcat in UK being stiffed by his insurance company which claimed that the policy only covered the hull, and that the akas and amas were accessories, and therefore not covered! I was extremelky careful when arranging insurace cover for my Tandem IUsland, to ensure the policy described the vessel fully.

Here in my state, an Island is considered to be an off-the-beach boat, and does not require any safety equipment other than a PFD, despite its proven offshore sailing capabilities, yet if you add a small electric outboard, you then require to carry full equipment including a fire bucket!
