Evidently I own/bought the boat that won the 1987 NACs. The guy I bought the boat from knew part of the story of the boat but he didn't know the name of the sailor. I looked in the Hobie archives on the HCANA page but no luck.

Funny, The boat has a 1981 registration/title but the port hull is a 1985 and the starboard is a 1984 (Red Line). It hasn't been sailed much since it looks like. Happy to say the boat is in serviceable condition and might be sailed at the North American Event this year in Oregon.

Find a boat, rework, recondition, find a sailor........repeat.

If you know who won the 1987 H18 NAs let me know. Thanks, Scott

Gentlemen,
If the Hobie 18 mentioned above, sailed by Don Estapa to win the 18 Nationals, that Hobie 18 is resting comfortably in my brother Don Estapa's yard in Bay St Louis, MS....If the cat you purchased was represented as Don's boat, someone was not truthful with you.

Best regards,
Gene Estapa

I was at that Event and yes remember Don Estapa winning. Those boats where all factory supplied boats, all brand new. They had white hulls with racing stripes along the side. The sails where all dark purple.
I don,t remember Anyone there buying one of those boats,it was my understanding that they were being distributed to the dealers.
Very cool Event on Lac Mille Lac MN,with Miles Wood and Paul Ulibarie (sp) on the RC.
