I am looking for suggestions for a new main sheet that will work well with my existing seaway ratchet blocks, feed out well, have a nice grip and still be reasonably priced. My existing sheet is getting weathered and does not want to feed out when I have the ratchet block on. Also how long is suggested?

Internet buy able is a plus

Salsa... You will love it. Totally worth the little bit extra...

I use it on my H16 main blocks and LOVE it.. The only thing I am struggling with is I have Maffoli Swiftcord for my jib sheet and LOVE it too.. I am seriously tempted to buy some and try it out for the main..

Both seem a little spendy compared to other choices... but I figure they last a long time and really there isn't that much difference in total cost... They both are soft and grippy enough you may even consider downsizing to let it feed even better...

the cheaper but still great choice I am familiar with is the new england bzzz line..

The only thing I can think of which might cause you to not like these lines is that they are all "dry" lines, meaning they absorb very little water.. This means they may not snap out of seaway blocks sometimes as easily as a heavier line..

I hadn't actually noticed that the Main & Jib sheet are specified as "spun braid." What's the difference between spun braid & yacht braid? Halyard and Flag Halyard?

+1 on Salsa. Made the switch 2 yrs ago based on the recommendation of someone I respect. No Regrets. Seems to have good longevity too :)

"Spun braid" is a term used with Dacron lines that have a fuzzy cover that's easy on the hands. "Yacht braid" has a harder cover that's more suitable for use in winches (like on a keelboat).

I can't stress this enough - don't go cheap on a mainsheet. Your hands will never forgive you.

Salsa's the best, period. A new Salsa mainsheet will cost less than $50. That's less than a tank of gas these days.

What size Salsa line do you recommend? It comes in metric sizes. I heard the smaller lines flowed through the blocks easier but the trade off was less grip in your hand. The seaway blocks really grip the rope as my issue with my current line is that it will not feed out, even in a gust, with the ratchet on.

Salsa is good, certainly on the pricey side. There are some other options, I want to say zip line from west marine?

10mm for main.

I'm still happy with Sta-Set line from New England Ropes. They sell it at West Marine. It's reasonably priced and nicer than the stock spun dacron line that Hobie provides. It's a little heavier than most of the high tech lines which makes it easy to snap out of the cleats.

West Marine doesn't have their own brand of line for this application, but they sell New England Ropes (maker of Salsa), Samson and FSE Robline.

10 mm ~ 3/8" is the max size you should consider, especially with old Seaway blocks that don't work as well as Harken blocks. Salsa would be OK, but a stiffer line, like Sta-Set would probably not work as well.

8 mm ~ 5/16" is what most racers use, since it runs through the blocks better, and with a soft line like Salsa, is just as easy on the hands.

The one thing going against a soft line + Seaway blocks is the toothed metal ratchet sheave. It'll prematurely wear the line. Harken blocks have a hexagonal sheave on the ratchet that's much easier on the line.

Well that's good to hear! I just bought 44' of 5/16" New England Sta-set yacht braid line from West Marine for my jib sheet. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, hopefully this weekend. I didn't realize that there was much difference when it comes to running rigging, unless you're talking about dynema or STS line.

Maffoli Swiftcord. Some of the F18 guys use it on their $20k boats, was recommended to me that I try it when I bought new high tech main blocks. Feels great and flies thru blocks. I use 8mm with 8:1 blocks but you'd probably want 9mm for most applications. I just ordered some Bzzz mainsheet for a Hobie 16 I bought last weekend, it came highly recommended and the price was great.
Don't skimp on your mainsheet, long term your hands and pocket will thank you :0)

+2 on the New England Ropes. I use it on both main and jib. of course now I wish a bought a smaller diameter for the main sheet, mine's only two seasons old.

I went with the Robline 8mm on the main. And am going to replace the jib sheet with 7mm Robline. I had the dacron lines at 3/8", but they fill with water and will get dragged overboard. They also didn't flow through the blocks as nicely after 5 years or so. I also changed the blocks out at the same time, making the system completely removable.

I used Samson Trophy Braid in 8mm (5/16). Terrific mainsheet for a good price, and it doesn't shred your hands/gloves.
