I live in Western Ky and plan on buying a Hobie Cat this summer. My wife and I would like to find people to sail with and help us to learn to sail.

I'm having the same problem in Louisville finding other Hobie Sailors. I've seen two more boats this winter. Hoping to get to Kentucky Lake this summer with the boat after a MAJOR trailer rehab. Where do you plan on sailing? Would love to meet up....normally sail out of Kentucky Dam Marina.

Bswain,

I'm a Fulton native and actually know a little bit of Western Kentucky Hobie trivia. Believe it or not, there used to be an active fleet, #214 (same number as Pappy Boyington's famed WWII Black Sheep squadron) that sailed out of the Kentucky Dam State Park Marina. The fleet was founded in 1977 and probably had a dozen or so members at it's peak in the early 80's. I was a charter member at the ripe old age of 15. We were predominantly H-16s, with a couple of 18s and a 14 thrown in. We ususally held two or three Division 10 regattas per year and were fortunate enough to draw sailors from Southern Illinois and the Nashville area. The ring leaders were Dave Cleaver (now deceased) from Calvert City and Billy Crider from Crittenden County.

Back in the day we would go up to Carbondale, Illinois, a couple times a year to race with the fleet up there (always a blast) or sometimes go down to Nashville to race in regattas sponsored by the Percy Priest yacht club. You might want to check with them to see if they are still active. Memphis has a Hobie dealer but I don't know if they have a fleet or not. The dealer, Rooke Sails, caters to sailors that sail on Lake Arkabutla and Lake Sardis in Mississippi.

I have family in Murray and may get back up there this summer. If so, I'll probably bring my H-20 with me and give Kentucky Lake a whirl for old times sake. I'll let you know if I get back up there. It's always more fun to have other Hobies on the water with you.

What boat do you have? Good luck and smooth sailing.

My wife and I bought a getaway last nite and will pick it up next Sat. The old owner agreed to set it up with me on Sat. The Hobie dealer in Grand Rivers sold out to a bike shop and the new owner stored the boats that was left over. This was one of those boats that a man bought and kept for two summers and only sailed it one summer 12 times.

Sign up on the Hobie Social Network. It'll help you search for Hobie sailors in your area.

It's a few hrs south of Nashville but my friends and I sail every weekend at Arkabuttla lake in N Miss. There's 6 or 7 of us that show up all the time. I've got a 16 and a 20, my buddy has a 16 and a 20, there's two H18 guys, two H17 guys and a new getaway couple that sail here too. If you wanted to make a weekend of it there's great full facility camping and you could use our 16's for the weekend if you like. They're all mast up ready to go. The website is deltasailing.com. Doesn't show a Hobie fleet but trust me, we're here!
