let's move on...we're lucky to own a "decent" 14. None of us will ever have new hulls, let alone a new boat.

Your other USA option is the Wave, if you want a one-up boat. Do you want to sail standard HCA, upwind/downwind courses and fool yourself in to thinking that there's some fun in the "tactical" dead downwind run to the gate?

What about a class for two sailed Waves, adding the roller furling "hooter" to a Wave? Rick White says they're damn near as fast as a H16. Why spend money chasing 1967 technology (H14) when we could move to 1992 (Wave) technology and maybe improve on that.

Is it class legal to get out my belt sander and fair the hulls on a Wave?

That's a nice setup. It makes mine look pretty ghetto. No keg/kettles here , just a cheapo Bayou Classic turkey fryer and a rectangular igloo cooler.

No you're not. And neither am I. I have a theory that we're all beer drinkers with a sailing problem. The Hobie forums are part of the 12-step program to further our obsession.

There's a Hobie 14 for sale around here. The guy says its a 1997. Not possible right?

It may be possible. I forget what year Hobie officially discontinued production of the 14. Modderman was on a 1994 boat at this year's NAC. I think Hobie Europe may even still be making them.

The best way to tell would be by the HIN for starters and then by the hull graphics, sail pattern, and overall condition. If it is a 1997 boat, it would certainly be a rare find in the states. Ask the seller for pics and some history.

Probably for the best that I'm not driving to Chicago tonight for a boat I don't need.

how much is a Hobie 16 purchased in Hawaii? is it the same cost as in the mainland? who pays the shipping? the oahu dealer online doesnt have the cost. just curious

Am cracking up and probably shouldn't post this as it's an old topic, but cannot resist. My '95 Hobie Wave revealed a couple of things that are relevant to the demise of domestic H14 mfg. One is that Hobiecat made the first 1400 or so Waves with H14 mast bases and steps. The Wave has a 14 comptip. The mast section is only two feet shorter and same extrusion. The crossbars are H14 mast extrusion. Those first rudder assy's were upper and lower 17/18/20 castings. Now, of course they're the plastic assy. Anyway, if I were to destroy my Wave mast, or break the crossbars, or loose my rudders, I've got some 14 masts, a 14 comptip and an extra H17 rudder upper and lower to replace it with. Cool! Don't throw away those parts you hoarders!
