One of the black plastic eyes used to attach seat straps on hobie 14ti popped off. Suggestions for best epoxy(?) to use for repair?

There is a repair kit included with each boat. Glue and scraps of vinyl. Clean the surfaces if the part and the hull. Apply glue to both and wait about five minutes... and then press them together.

This video shows gluing an accessory mount, but same process: http://www.youtube.com/embed/q8C-pFSS_kc?autohide=1&autoplay=1&color=white&fs=1&rel=0&showinfo=0&theme=light&

Matt,

If the glue in the repair kit is a 3 years old (or older) should one get a fresh tube? Any way to tell if the glue is still good before using?

Thanks!

I would think fresh would be best, but I'm not aware of an expiration date on that. You could test on a scrap?

Several of the black pad eyes have pulled off my i9. It is about 4 years old, and hasn't been used much the last 3 years (we're using the Outback and Revolution 11 instead). Is this a common problem?
What do I use to clean the parts before gluing them back on? I probably need to get new tubes of glue for my patch kits. What is the best glue to use, and where do I get it?

You can clean the old adhesive off the fittings & hull with acetone or MEK. Acetone is a little less nasty & expensive - you can buy it at the drug store as nail polish remover ( just look for "100% acetone" as the ingredients). Both will dissolve the plastic fittings & PVC fabric a little, so go easy. Wear gloves & a respirator & work outdoors or in a well ventilated area.

Hobie will recommend their adhesive. I've used HH-66 Vinyl Cement with good results. It's available online.

Actually. having the solvent damage the PVC fabric was my main concern. What does Hobie use when they assemble the boats?

Don't worry too much about the acetone & MEK damaging the fabric. It just softens the surface of the plastic a little. Once it evaporates everything is fine. Acetone & MEK are the solvents used in most vinyl adhesives, so no escaping them. Look at the ingredients in the cement tube supplied by Hobie with the patch kit or accessories, for example.

If you go nuts & leave an MEK soaked rag on the fabric for a while then rub the crap out of the fabric, yeah you may damage the fabric. If you just rub normally you'll notice a little color on the cloth you use to clean the PVC fabric. That's okay.

There's quite a few videos showing how to repair vinyl boats. Look at the NRS or Sailrite websites for example. Check out this website: http://www.yostwerks.com. It has tons of useful info on working with PVC fabric for kayak building.

BTW: If you want a cheap source for small amounts of acetone/MEK solvent look for PVC pipe CLEANER (NOT primer or cement) at your local hardware store in the plumbing section. The small tins are the perfect size for a small job. Look at the ingredients as they can vary from batch to batch. You should be able to find ones that are an acetone/MEK mix with no other solvents. Make sure it has no color added!

Replacing the pad eyes seems a good idea. Does the glue form a more secure and permanent fix?

The vinyl padeyes are stronger for a few reasons.

The surface area is larger, so more area for the adhesive to bond. The vinyl is pliable, so it moves with the boat fabric to better distribute stresses. The padeye vinyl is the same as the boat vinyl, so it bonds better than the plastic fittings do IMO.

The down side is they cost about $10 apiece!

If you have chronic adhesion problems with the plastic fittings the first thing I'd try is an aftermarket adhesive like HH-66 with a known manufacture date & shelf life. I simply don't trust the little tubes included in the kits. It's nice that Hobie includes them, but who really knows when they were manufactured & how long the parts were warehoused, etc.

I bought the Hobie padeye to replace a missing one on my i12s.
However, I realized that the shape/area of the intended to paste is not entirely flat on the i12s

Is there a way to 'shape' the padeye to form in the same curve when I glue it back onto the i12s?

thanks in advance !
