Hi all!

Suddenly realized how close it was to getting warm in New England so I finally got around to my H17 winter project, repairing a leaky wing port!

Here's the album: http://imgur.com/a/EcHTi

Hopefully that helps someone out that's considering doing the same repair.

I used West System 105 Resin / 205 Hardner and carbon cloth. I'd be happy to answer any questions!

Hey, cool! Thanks parts guy! Between my cousin and I we've done 4 now (3 different H17s's). After what these boats have been through it's really cool we can repair them so easily with a little research and work.

Thanks for the post and the pics! This will help a ton. I have a few wing tubes that need work. The previous owner left it out barely covered over winter.

What do you use to glue in the inspection ports? perhaps MBonds can help answer too- I know not to use 5200 and that I dont need to screw it down even, but I've used some less aggressive adhesive caulks and they just cant handle the stress of water and pressure (being sat on or stepped on).

Plain old silicone adhesive has worked for me many times. No need to get any fancy marine sealant.

Hey sorry for the late reply...my email notifications aren't set up.

All you do is buy the inspection port kit from a Hobie dealer, it comes with plastic screws and a tube of silicone adhesive...that's it! Comes with instructions that are very easy to follow.

Also, for the port repair - epoxy is pretty simple to work with just make sure to invest time in good prep work!

Good luck!

I agree with other's comments on a very nice job.
How many layers of fiberglass/carbon fiber did you use in the repairs.
Did you use less than to full amount of catalyst to get longer working life?
Any tips on coating the back side of the tubes? Mirror?

Any suggestions apprciated

We started with 3 feet of fiberglass (3ftx1ft) then cut it down to two 3 foot long 6 inch wide strips. We wrapped the bottom, then continued up the tube, overlapping each wrap by half the width...so it's like wrapping a hockey stick, you overlap it a bit for added strength.

No, we used the exact formula for the resin...you could lengthen your working time if you want, I don't see that being a problem.

For coating it, use two pairs of rubber gloves and a long sleeve shirt, you literally scoop up the resin with your hand then massage it on around the tube and fiberglass.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion.
I assume from your comments that you put resin on the tubes, then wrapped the 6" x 36" cloth, then added "handfull (s)" of resin and work it in.
It a bit cool in TN just now so I'll wait for a warm day.

Yep..that's what we did. resin>wrap>resin.

Still holding up two years later, no issues.
