 Rotor, that's a great question for Hobie.

The biggest flooding problem on this run (other than diving) came from water geysers in the cockpit. FusionBob recently pointed this out. At higher speeds, the drive well and scuppers were a real drag (even with the plug in). For us, that's true on most days, at different points of sail. Need a better seal.

On the wave rides, you also see the swells interact with various parts of the boat (understatement). On a lowrider like the TI, no part is immune, but the extra Aka bars and Hakas also scrape the wave as it passes, or when you stuff the bow.

Not much to be done about this other than design in more rocker and freeboard. Although you could start by raising and arching the Aka arms to clear the swells. It's a common feature on most outriggers here, regardless if the boats are built of wood, carbon or glass.

Alas, wet Okoles are just part of the "good life" here.

HI,

I am a South African and I own a TI. I am going on an expedition this year on the Zambezi River, and my TI will be the beast of burden. Take a look at the intro video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfKRyWt ... e=youtu.be

Due to all the crocs and also gear we are taking, I want to turn my TI into a TI3 - the rear seat is pretty low in the water as you know, and Zambezi crocs are hungry. Timing is pretty tight as I need to get all the extras needed to do so sent to me by Hobie.

Would you be able to let me know exactly which parts are required to add the extra aka?

Thank you in advance for your time. Your TI3 looks epic!

Cheers,
Steve

Steve, I don't recommend this mod for your expedition. It does not add any floatation but does add extra weight and complexity. You also would lose the ability to fold the Amas. That could be important. A Stock TI is better suited to your expedition, as it has proved in the Everglades Challenge every year.

You will need to be in the saddle, pedaling much of the time (likely to attract crocs, no?) so a set of lightweight/quick release Hakas for the front and maybe a small wing seat for the rear position would be my choice. (Or you could just sit up on a padded cooler). The Hakas can carry gear and could be a great help while poling. http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=37645

Keep it simple, and don't feed the animals is my advice, for this trip.

Nohuhu,

I can't find the reason you moved the Ama's back to the forward position. What were the con's of them being in the back position ? I love your mods BWT. And thank you for taking the time to share, show and post all that you have done.

JD

I just ordered the rear xbar and mounts and am going to transform my TI to a "TI2.5", aka the TI3 v2, where the akas & amas can be moved to the rear position. Thanks for posting your mods Nohuhu, the pics and videos are helpful.

I suspect that with two people, the TI is more well balanced in the standard configuration (with hakas, of course). When I sail alone, however, the boat is rarely balanced properly because the sweet spot seems to be well behind the standard aka position, and outboard of the rear seat.

I like that with the rear cross bar, I can easily change the configuration as need be.

If this doesn't satisfy me, then the TI3 upgrade will be next.

Any suggestions on how to strengthen the connection of the third xbar to the TI behind the rear passenger?

I was first going to use washers, but perhaps a single backing plate on each side is required to provide the necessary strength to support the stresses that will be applied by the xbar.

Just noticed this... so for the delay.

Well what else do you call a covered area with a door in which you park vehicle(s) and/or Islands? I can't think of an alternative. :D :D :D
