The 2006 Tiger NA's had to be cancelled at the last minute, due to lack of participation (only 2 boats registered). This caused a considerable amount of embarrassment for the class, inasmuch as the prestigious St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco was the host.

Fortunately, the H-17's saved face for the whole class association by putting on an exemplary show of sportsmanship for the folks at St. Francis. (It was to have been a combined event.)

Anyway, the decision was made at the 2006 HCA Annual Meeting that the HCA would not "force" another North Americans for the Tigers.

If the Tigers want a North Americans, then they will have to do some of the legwork and get it off the ground.

Are you volunteering Moyra? :D

We are supposed to hear a pitch for 17/18/Tiger NA's at our Division 4 AGM this weekend.

With as much as the Tigers complained about having to truck across the country to the left coast for the second year in a row, I don't know if such a thing will be workable this year.

We'll see!

But the good news is there is a NAF18 North American Championships, in Texas, October 8th-12th 2007.

Chris.

I am totally new to any type of racing. I have never participated in a race and in fact have just had my 16 for two seasons, maybe someday. I do have an observation.

Last year if I remember right all the racing at the Tiger and 17 NA's was Monday thru Thursday. This year the racing for the 16 NA's is Monday thru Friday.

I would love to come and watch, make a weekend of it. I know that this is the event of the year to see, but without a racing day over a weekend I believe that it cuts out on new people coming to the sport. I know that I don't know all the details/traditions of putting on these events, but I think this is a bit of an oversight.

Just my 2 cents

I believe it has to do with travel to and from the event along with costs of booking hotels and sites over weekends. You need a travel day and setup day before and same on the back side. Racers can then take just a week off of work to attend.

Hobie Dude,
Trust me, take a day or two off work to take a look. The racing is usually close the last day of the event with the top teams competing. It will be well worth the time.

Now if you can't pull that off, you don't need to observe a national level event to test the waters racing locally. You will find some of the best and most enjoyable racing with your local buddies. Contact your local fleet, hop on the boat of one of the experienced sailors and then join the club for a local race. The non-racing days are likely to allow more time to learn the basics; to keep you from following the fleet for a few years while you catch on...

Hobie Dude:

Mike Hammond is right. You have some of the best sailors on 16s in the Nation right in your back yard (Nor CA). Go to a regatta and see if you can help out on a mark boat or the committee boat.

Later,
Dan

I plan on doing my best to get there. I'd love to meet some of you folks that have helped me start out with this sport, maybe I'll hit you up for a quick sail.

Dan,
Since there are no Tiger north Americans this year, do you think you can scare up a 20 for the North American's in Alameda. There are a few at MBYC that are not going. Any dormant 20's up your way?

I did make an attempt to find one. I cannot imagine any of the Hobie 20s in the area not racing there, so I cannot image where I am going to get one.

I am planning on attending the Formula 18 North Americans in Galveston, TX. I think it would be great to do both.

Thank you Nicholas for the smile

Later,
Dan

Hey Hobie Dude, Give me a call and I can get you on a chase boat to watch the action at some of our local regattas here in div3. We're always looking for help, and the view from the water will teach you a ton about racing.
