Has anyone ever tried a bigger sail on the AI (something like the sail of the Bravo (86 sqft instead of the AI's 57)?

The wind is usually quite light around here and the AI could use a larger sail area.

Maybe someone at Hobie can tell us the diameter of the Bravo mast, and the length between the base and the furler. If the diameter is right, I might be able to replace the cup base with pin-type base from the AI.

I suspect I'm not the only crasy sailor out there who'd like to get a turbo sail!

Yep--several different sail dimensions have been tried on different boats from the Sport on up. Especially see punchinello's experiments as reported on the KFS site.

Thanks for the tip Apalach. I monitor the KFS site but for some reason missed that thread! Quite good indeed.

I explored the jib route but haven't found a way to attach the jib to the mast head and sill retain the main furling ability.

And I like the idea of a simple one stick (unstayed) rig.

But the KFS thread doesn't mention whether the Bravo mast can be used on the AI. I'm not too concerned about support as I would plan on using this rig only in light winds, but I don't have a Hobie dealer nearby to go check the diameter of the Bravo mast (all I know are the published dimensions). If the diameter and the length between furler and base are reasonably close, I would swap the cup at the base of the Bravo mast with the pin base insert from the AI, and be done.

Wouldn't that be cool!

Anyone at Hobie who can give us the Bravo mast diameter?

Right on xavier. Hard to get the actual measuements though from either the Hobie Web site or the catalog, but here is what I could come up with. In reference to your question about the Bravo mast diameter, it depends on which part of the mast you are referring to it seems. Note in the below diagram of the Bravo mast step that the lower pin is about 3/8 inch in diameter, while the main part of the mast is around 1 ½ inches in diameter from what I can gather in reading over the info on the Hobie Web site, or in the Bravo catalog.

I don’t really know if the above are the actual measurements or not—but they seem to fit the diagram and the closeup pic that I found. Here is the pic of the base of the Bravo mast.

Perhaps Matt Miller or someone else on the Hobie site can give you an actual measurement, but it would not surprise me if the Bravo mast could fit the BigA or AI. Good luck!

Bravo mast / sail on a Adventure Island?

The Island has a bunch of power for the size of boat it is. People are always furling to maintain an even keel. I would say that more power is not needed, but for the tool time crowd...

The bottom of the Bravo mast is aluminum and too large a diameter to fit into the mast step system on the Island.
