Any of you tried flying a kite from your kayak?
Not easy!
I don't want to poopoo the idea. I tried it for a good reason... But it's not as obvious and easy as the videos make it seem. These kites are the kinds they use with kite boards (i.e. with air bladders so they don't sink). Once the kite is in the air, it's a blast (I love playing with mine). But getting it there can be a struggle (just read the doc that comes with one of these and transpose it to you being in a kayak!)
I've tried a number of kite configurations over the last few years. If you have plenty of wind, enjoy spending more time in the water than above it, and just want to go fast, then you'll have a blast. Kiteyaking is the way to go.
However if you're mostly a kayaker or traditional sailor who just want to add some speed to your yak, this may be more than you bargain for.
One other option are box kites. While kiteboarding kites may be hard to launch from a kayak, box kites are much easier to launch. However they still need a fair amount of wind and will only tow you downwind (40 degrees off on each side).
I'm still looking for the killer solution that I can launch from my kayak in the middle of the ocean and tHat can tow me at least 60 degree off the wind. What a cool toy this would be
Anyone with solutions to share?
