I set mine up the same way you see in the pics and for the backing to mount the FF, I used some PVC board which was easy to cut to the exact size of the base plate. It also holds screws great. Use a coping saw.

What about power sources for fish finders? I've seen some models that operate on AA batteries, but has anyone used a fish finder with a 12-volt source in a kayak? If so, do you use a motorcycle battery or what? Thanks.

Alan.. For a year.. I've been using a AA pack with no problems and might change it out for a 12v and get a charger for it also. Some people use the computer's UPS batteries. Either way... they work great!! Here is an old auction... but gives you the info on 12v's.

Let us know which way you went.. and how it worked out for you! Good luck!! :)

I bought and use the 7.0 amp hour battery in waterproof case from www.kayakfishingstuff.com. Havn't had it go flat yet despite lots of use between chargings. :)

I bought my 12 volt 7 amp online from Hook1. The delivery service from those guys is great. I will be setting up my Adventure and will probably try a set up like the one on this thread and my battery will be inside the hull. Will probably use a Scotty flush mound and install it on the forward vertical wall inside the cockpit to run the battery wire and transducer wire to the inside of the hull.

What kind of pipe is the 7/8" OD PVC pipe used in the mast hole? 1/2" Schedule 40 irrigation pipe is a bit small but the next size up is 3/4" which would be to big. Is this electrical PVC pipe or...?

Mine is in the center hatch. I modded the base of a rod holder to attach directly to my ff. Now the ff can rotate, tilt and mount in any of my three flush mounts. The cable comes up through the flush mount and through base on the rod holder. I gooped a gasket onto the wire to seal it as it passes though flush mount. The center hatch is optimal for me as its accessible, opens with the ff mounted, and is easy to move out of the way if I'm sidesaddle. Image Image Image

What a great site and wealth of information. I like all these ideas!

Area 61: I like your drink holder idea, can you provide some more details? Is the FF permanently mounted? How? Did you drill thru for the power and TD?

Jojo: What base did you use? Details please!

The drink holder option...
I fly fish and use the cockpit hatch area to hold stripped fly line...
It's easier to react and run the unit with my right hand...out of the way to the right of my leg and clear of pedal strokes...
I used the GPS mount that came with the unit...3 gooped stainless screws hold it in place...
The power and transducer wires had to pass through a small drilled hole in the bottom of the drink holder well...more goop...
The only way to make it water tight was to use adequate goop to seal the deal...no leaks and no water in the hull...semi-perm...sofarsogood!
The GPS unit can be removed from the mount but the mount and wires are essentially perminent...'could be removed and the holes filled but not in my life time...
The transducer is epoxied onto the bottom of the hull in front of the Mirage Drive...not thru-hull! The temp function works fine as the hull and transducer reach the temp of the water...10-15 minutes...close enough for government work!
The rechargable 12v Cabela's battery has industrial strength velcro that holds it in place just below the GPS location...
Recharging is easy and lasts weeks...
GPS & battery will be in the house for the winter...
Very pleased with the Revo, Mirage Drive, and all my tweeks/upgrades...
NO REGRETS / NO WORRIES!

Wali,

I'm having a hard time visualizing how you can move the ff to any of your three flush mounts...do you pull enough cable to reach each one, and then pull it back to the center hatch? If so, you are plugging and unplugging the connection to the ff each move? Can you post a few more pics?

Sorry BJ; have not checked this board for a while.

Yes, the unit must be unplugged to move from one flushmount base to another. The cable must then be led up through the other base, then through the mount.

I posted some more pics and details on the FF mount here

http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=8315

On my Adventure, I used a Berkley/Attwood rod base. WAAAY to much trouble. I used the Scotty base in the later post (blue boat) and that was much easier. Drill it out, add grommets, washers, and a nut and bolt.

I like hanging the FF outsite the console. More space and better ergonomics (i.e reachable).

Just keep it far enough ahead to avoid hitting it with a paddle.
