The selection process for pre-qualified spots is on the HCA website.

Look under the Ranking section

Hey Bob
I would like you and the officers to look at making the Nationals worth more in the rankings.
If the ranking system is to be used as a Worlds qualifier, then showing what you can do at the Nationals head to head should be very important.
If I look at the rankings, I see 10 people ahead of me that did not attend this years event. There are 8 more ahead of me that I beat this year at the Nationals. I count 4 that have not attended a Nationals since 1998 and maybe never.
If you do some quick math and use this years high points winner Mark Moderman as an example, Mark did not have to attend the Nationals at all and still would win high points.
I don't pretend to be Worlds caliber and Mark sailed great all year in the toughest divisions (11&16) and is deserving.
I do think it is important to Identify the correct people to qualify and make it worth while to attend the Nationals.

Hi Pat

When we first started working on the new ranking system we did try to weight the North Americans more heavily. Rob Jerry and his brother did a lot of work with the math and hypothetical results. In the end we decided not to give the NAs extra weight because the event was already weighted by virtue of the large attendance. If we had weighted the event much at all the ranking results would almost entirely be decided by the NAs. This was the result in our hypothetical. In the end if we want our results to coincide to the NAs the answer is simple. Weight the NAs 100% and don't count anything else. Instead the ranking has turned into something that has it's own identity that is in some way different from the North American Championship and I like that.

On the subject of the Worlds qualifier the ranking doesn't count very much under the current system. Since we pick sailors from the ranking before picking anyone else we end up using the ranking to select sailors that would qualify under any system.

For example we are going to take the top 6 sailors from the ranking and then the next 4 from the 2006 NAs. If instead we just took the top 10 from the 2006 NAs the result would be the same. Obviously this may not happen every year but I think the point is still valid. The very top teams get the spots no mater what.

What really matters is how the final 7 sailors are selected because that's where most of the other top teams have a chance. The final seven are selected at the NAs and it's one regatta where everyone has the same opportunity in head to head racing.

That said I would never say our ranking system is perfect. I would encourage anyone to derive a new formula and propose it with some hypothetical results using past years data.

Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob.
I would offer that the large number of boats at a Nationals doesn't really weight them. The competition is also much more difficult and what I see in the numbers is after the top 5 or so places that many people sail to their season average.
You did very well (4th) and earned above average points.
I look at our scorekeeper Bill Jeffers and see he earned almost exactly his season average.
I checked mine and also was just above my season average.
What this says is that the Nationals don't do much to improve positions at the end of the year unless you sail way above your head. I don't see that with anyone.
What can be seen is people that place well below their season average and if they have 5 other events in it also doesn't change anything.

I don't have all the answers. Just mostly questions.

How can we make the Nationals more important to attend?
Shouldn't they make more of a differance in the final rankings?

The Worlds qualifier says that you will only take people from the top 20 from the rankings.
I would hate to see someone like Mike Siau or Jim Glanden lose a spot because they are just outside the top 20 with 5 people ahead of them that did not attend and others that they beat.

Not trying to upset anyone, just food for thought.
