Does anyone here have boat insurance covering their Hobie?
I know that your auto insurance covers it when you're towing and homeowners covers it when it's in your drive/backyard, but has anyone gotten the extra coverage for when it's in the water?
Given the actual fair market value of our boats, it might be a little silly to spend the bucks for coverage?
What do you think?

Nick

I have mine insured (similiar to liability/comprehensive/collision on a car). Its an '83 Hobie 16. Cost about $60 a year. You might double check your homeowner's insurance. Unless it specifically states a boat is covered, they probably won't pay. I was told that if it is something insurable on its own right (cars, houses/apts, boats, motorcycles) then it must have its own policy to be insured. Bottom line check before you need it.

It's always better to have it than not - especially since insuring a Hobie is pretty inexpensive. Not only will the insurance cover damage to your boat, but if someone gets hurt and sues, you're covered to some degree. In the past year I've had two friends make claims on their insurance for their Hobies. The first had his 20 sitting on the beach when a gust picked it up and threw it down the beach - broken mast among other things. Another flipped his 16 near a sandbar and had his boat almost destroyed by pounding waves slamming the boat into the bar.

Sounds good.
What companies are you using for your boat insurance?

I just bought an Allstate policy for my new (used) Hobie 16 also. It's about $6.00 each quarter. This covers loss or theft of boat/trailer plus $100K liabilty w/ $500 deductable. Not bad! It is well worth it for the peace of mind alone! BTW, my homeowner's does not cover the boat.
