This question is directly for Matt Miller--

How does the factory handle making 14 sails? I mean, do you make a certain amount a year or in batches, or do you make them on demand? I was curious about getting a new sail with an older pattern and I'm wondering if you had anything extra in stock. I don't have a dealer in my area (Virginia Beach, VA) so I don't have a resource to turn to other than the factory. The 2004 catalog just lists either white or special order, so what if you wanted a Sublime, or Misty or even Carumba pattern?

Unfortunately, I had to follow Chris around the course at the NAs and got a good look at his Sublime sail.

Just tired of looking at my white main..

Dan

Sails are built in batches. For lack of real interest in colored sails for the 14, I decided not to stock a specific color. The colors available for custom are what we have in stock for current production, plus some left overs from previous years. Carumba is not possible.

Actually, we are very low on sail cloth as production has been well ahead of projections for the year. Easiest to choose from the colors shown for this year ( http://www.hobiecat.com/sailing/part_sails.html ). We have white sails in stock.

Here is an offer! I will waive the custom charges on any custom Hobie 14 sail ordered before the end of the year (from available cloth colors, of course). I will sell ( through authorized dealers ) Hobie 14 Mains at the old full color price of $764.50 USD

I've got a question for you, Matt - I ordered my 14 sail in August (all white) - it's got a mfg date of 8/11/04 on the sailmaker's patch.

The sail number is 52350.

There were a number of sails at the nationals in Syracuse that were higher - significantly higher. Yet all these sails were significantly older.

What gives? I thought sail numbers were kind of like serial numbers (except on special orders and special events).

I am spreading the word on the colored 14 sails up here in the midwest. Question: What colors are available? Should a guy just order Misty, or can you be a little creative? I would order this through my Dealer in Des Moines then right?

Man, and I wanted to go 'Old School' with Carumba or Tequila Sunrise!

Those teal/white/blue sails were cool, too.

I saw a sail color called 'Goldfinger', that is old school. There is also a pattern called "Flamer", but I think you should stay away from that one.

I have never though Carumba is all that good looking, but I have only seen it on old blown out sails too.

I really like Misty though........

Order an existing pattern or one of your making using existing colors. Either way.

Order through your favorite dealer.

That is odd that older production dates had higher numbers? Can't really explain that one. Can you give me a couple of the other sail numbers. I can check the production log.

52827 (John Witmer) had one of the older logo patches (30 years of Hobie Cats)
52403 (Dan Berger)

xanderwess was close at 52295 with that snazzy Island pattern.

Hey Dan, you can have the sail that came with my boat - Plum Crazy - you might find it a wee bit blown out, tho'

I notice that the Europeans have much higher sail numbers, but I know that they are allocated in batches & the US just hasn't used up their batch yet.

Looks like the Hobie sail loft has gotten out of sync on sail numbers for the Hobie 14!

They are reviewing, but they should have been putting sail numbers in the 60000's on Hobie 14 sails. Not sure, at this point, when the problem began, but they are using a series of numbers that is in the middle of 1993 production numbers. Can't tell if these are duplicates at this point, but they tell me that the next Hobie 14 sails will probably be in the 62000-ish range.

So that means I can send mine back for a "corrected" number, right?

So since my sail number is wrong, can get a free new one? Something in my college colors with a huge 'Captain Morgan' on it?

No problem guys... I promise to give free replacement sail... numbers (#6s). Not sure you can fit a captain morgan on one though.

My racing main is 52403, and is about 2-3 years old. My '88 main was 51021. I'm buying a parts boat with a 9-10 year old 6 batten main that has numbers in the 51000s. Of course, I have a bunch of older sails in the 1000s, too.

When are you going to start making us square tops???
