I was noticing the top of my sail was really twisting, just didn't seem right and figured it was the comp tip twisting inside the lower mast section. I found a Bravo manual on-line, reviewed the mast assembly procedure and found some differences.

For one thing, the manual showed a white comp tip, mine is black (the color isn't the issue, but maybe indicates different model). It also mentioned that the comp tip had a notch that fit into a rivet in the lower section, preventing it from twisting.

My comp tip has the 2 pieces of tape around the end that fits into the lower section, but no notch. Looking into the lower section, there is an inner tube that limits how far the comp tip goes in, but no rivet.

Since I have an older boat, I figure the notch/rivet was added in later models to eliminate the twist. So is there any way to retro fit or modify the mast I have to eliminate the twist??

You should be able to drill the holes in the lower mast and insert some pop rivets. I am not sure what size the rivets would need to be, but is is defiantly possible. BTW i've never seen a white comptip either in a bravo.

I was thinking about installing a pop rivet (probably 3/16" SS) and notching the bottom of the comp tip. My concern is how deep of a notch and if there are any precautions to make.

I don't want to do anything that will create a crack in the comp tip, or some other long term problem.

I'm not sure what to tell you on that one. I've never paid attention to how big the notches are.

The book of knowledge says the Comptip notch rivet is a p/n 8010181, 6-4 panhead monel. Seems to me that the notch is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch deep. Our only Bravo is at the boat show, so I can't check. I'd use a dremel tool to cut it. Round the edges.

Thanks for the information, this helps a lot. Here's another thing to do on the weekend.

Boats.... If you're not using them, you're working on them.
