Mine were a hair off in one direction vs. another.
Switched the crossbar around and did it on a warm day when the
boat warmed up. There could be a temp issue. That said I'd contact Hobie on the measurements directly and see what they say.

On the masthead two holes I assume that since it was not mentioned in the instructions that it was something done during manufacturing for a reason. If you find out let us know. I never made any connection to the cross bar and it works fine.

here a pic how I fix the problem with the missfitting crossbar

http://w1.312.telia.com/~u31248095/expand.JPG

I covered the AI with black plastick and waited for the sun to warm the polythylen up. Hobie said I could used hot water . I used a screwexpand thing I found in the garage to press it out and suddenly the crossbar where in place.

I am sailing, I am sailing!

Glad you got it going!

The two tabs on the mast cup were designed for a different crossbar that has not yet gone into production. You disregard them.

:o Are we talking about a different crossbar for a new type of craft? As in an Island-tandem?

Or is Hobie, in its pursuit of ever better craft, just making an even better Island.

C'mon Matt - spill the beans!

I will put off spending money on a small daysailer for 2 if I know a Island-like tandem craft for 2 was available for this fall. 8)

Wife and I love our 2 '07 Islands we got in Oct. '06 - going strong - but at times wish for a single boat 2 person setup.

Tandem AI? Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please!

I'd have to redesign my kayak hoist to the garage ceiling, again (will three boats fit up there?), but it'll be worth it!

From another thread:

I do not expect any changes to the 2009 Adventure Island.

All recent changes were included with the 2008.

:) So then what about that different crossbar that has not yet gone into production? If it is NOT for the '09 Island.

Then... :?:

Ya, I'm feeling it - a NEW Hobie in the works. :P

It's a long way from a couple of little tabs to a Tandem Trisland, yakaholic. The subject has come up several times here, and I hope Hobie develops a tandem. Didn't someone say the length would be a production problem, and they would need a longer mold oven or something?

The wife and I had a great sail across the harbor and back yesterday afternoon. :D Having two boats is a lot of fun, but a tandem would be better for some people.

Ya, a couple of tabs do not make a tandem.

Now to the tea leaves.

Hobie developed a whole new mast, mast cup and mast hold down clip after only 1 year of the original Island. We know the new mast cup has 2 tabs and we know those are supposed to attach to new "different" crossbar which is going to be put into production. Matt already said there will be no changes in the '09 Island, so that rules out the Island.

Soo... Why put into production a different crossbar? Unless it was for a new boat.?

Lets approach this a different way. What do additional anchor points of the mast cup to a new crossbar accomplish? If you tie the mast cup to the crossbar you get a much stronger mast support. Why make it stronger? - For a bigger sail and/or a taller mast. The current mast & sail for the Island seems to be about right, but a tandem would sure need a bigger sail or mast.

Since Matt has been quiet and not added any more info to this thread, may be more confirmation that I might possible be right.

If lightning does strike twice and Hobie once again creates a whole new boat like a tandem trimaran I will have no hesitation to be an early adopter.

For fishing, stealth and manueverability, one person in the cockpit of a kayak seems a good fit.

For sailing, to maximize fun, a cockpit for two would be a great fit.

People have been asking about this tandem idea since right after the first AI was released.
One thing we have seen is that Hobie listens.
We have also seen that, except for tiny obscure hints, Hobie keeps a lid on things until they are ready to release a product.
Bigger sail and two mirage drives, now that'll be fun!!!!!
a tandem act of kindness, a senseless act of beauty....Hobie Style

It's probably just a matter of- When and What Price?

Don't ask me where I heard it but you might want to think "dual" as in offset mirage drives side by side rather than tandem. Boat won't get a lot longer.

You guys all know Matt well enough that he's not going to spill the beans before they're done cooking. After all, he hasn't told you about the....

Whoops. That's a secret too.
