I am planning on adding a barber-haul to my main, and adding
a small Hobie sail to the bow as a jib.

I don't like to have to hold control sheets manually if I can.
I prefer to stop down my lines with a c-cam cleat.

The Hobie Catalog lists a rubber expansion plug, into which I would
like to anchor the four cam cleats I would need.

Would the expansion plugs be strong enough for the lateral shear
that would be imposed on the cleats from the sails?

The "expansion" nuts or Well Nuts can hold really well in shear, but thru-bolt if there is considerable loads on the hardware. Well nuts are designed for blind attachment when you can not reach inside the hull with washers and nuts.

Matt

Do you think the padeye at the rear of the aka's would be strong enough to attach a barber hauler to?

Thanks

I have a bungie cord attached to the rear ama padeye and use it to hold the sheet out for downwind running all the time with no problem.

The bungie is tied to the rear padeye on the ama - so it always stays attached to the ama. On the other end of the bungie is an adjustable plastic hook so I can adjust the length, and thus the tension of the bungie if needbe.

Works great as an alternative to all the ropes of a barber hauler. Yes, I have a bungie on each ama, but only use the one required to hold the sail out to that side.

When bungies are not in use I just clip them to the rear aka frame where the brace attaches.

Yakaholic.

How do you reach the bungies?

The rear aka arms each has a brace assembly - thats the little arm that locks the aka/amas into their out position for sailing.

Where the brace assemble connects to the rear aka forms a little notch (just below the shear bolt, at the plastic connector).
That notch is a perfect location to clip the unused bungie. Simply reach behind, and to the side.

When you want to sail downwind grab the bungie hook, hold the sheet over to that side, and attach the bungie hook to the loop of rope at the mainsheet's eye.

When not using unclip from sail and reclip to notch of brace assembly. EZPZ & cheap

Bungie length is about 2feet.

The nice part is, since the bungie stays attached to the ama, I use the bungie to help secure the ama while transporting in PU truck.

PS I tried ropes to hold sail out and the bungies work much better.
